Christopher A. Ward Takes the Helm at ABI

The American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI) heralds a new era as Christopher A. Ward of Polsinelli LLP steps in as president for the upcoming year. Announced on Tuesday, Ward's presidency marks a significant transition in leadership, following the tenure of Soneet R. Kapila of KapilaMukamal LLP. The ABI also sees a reshuffling in its board, with U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Bruce Harwood set to take over from Ward in April next year.

Stepping into the role amidst the legacy of retired Judge Kevin J. Carey, Christopher Ward aims to honor the past while steering ABI towards a future enriched with diversity and innovation. Ward, who has chaired Polsinelli’s bankruptcy and restructuring practice, expressed his commitment to continuing the strategic plans initiated by Judge Carey, focusing on inclusivity and modernization in the ABI’s approach.

"It's been a long and worthy haul to get here," Ward mentioned in a discussion with Law360, emphasizing the prestige and responsibility that comes with leading the preeminent educational institute in insolvency.

Under Ward’s leadership, the ABI is set to embark on an ambitious journey to rejuvenate its membership. The focus will be on attracting a younger, more diverse cohort to its ranks. "ABI’s membership is aging, and we need to focus on bringing in new members, younger members and more diverse members," Ward elaborated on his vision for the organization.

Christopher Ward, a stalwart ABI member since 2003, completed his undergraduate studies at Moravian College and went on to earn a juris doctor degree from Widener University School of Law in 1999. His professional journey includes significant roles, such as managing shareholder at Polsinelli’s Delaware office, which have equipped him with the expertise to lead ABI effectively.

New Faces in Leadership Roles

In addition to presidential changes, the ABI announced new appointments within its executive ranks. Jennifer McLemore of Williams Mullen steps in as vice president of communications and information technology, succeeding Judge Harwood. Meanwhile, Ericka Johnson of Bayard will join as an at-large member of the executive committee.

The organization also reappointed three executive committee members for second terms and introduced five new directors to its board, reflecting a broadened perspective and renewed energy within the ABI.
