3D Printing at Wolf Ranch

The homes at Wolf Ranch are constructed using ICON's Vulcan construction system, which employs large-scale 3D printing robots. 

These robots create the walls of the homes by extruding a concrete-like material that is both durable and energy-efficient. The designs range from 1,500 to 2,100 square feet, featuring three to four bedrooms and two to three bathrooms.

 Each home is equipped with solar panels and energy-efficient wall systems. They are also resistant to mold, water, and fire. 

The community includes various high-end amenities such as pools, recreational trails, and parks.

A spokesperson for ICON told reported to Newsweek that, "ICON is a construction technology company developing robotic and AI systems to lower the cost and increase the speed and quality of construction to tackle the global housing crisis and prepare to build on other worlds."

3D Printing Details

ICON has recently introduced a state-of-the-art AI tool called Phoenix. It is capable of constructing 27-foot-tall, two-story buildings from foundation to roof components. It uses cleaner more seamless materials. 

This giant arm-like device enhances speed and setup time while requiring fewer operators, as reported by Interesting Engineering.

"What we once thought was impossible is now a prototype in the field, printing its first full-scale structure," said Evan Jensen, vice president of strategic research and development, described Phoenix as a "more advanced, more versatile system."

Phoenix operates as a single arm on a rotating base. A high-tech unit at the end of the arm can extend to dispense the construction "ink," a high-strength mix that offers a 24% carbon reduction.

 ICON's larger, 46-foot-wide setup is capable of printing single-story homes in volume, which helped ICON and its partners start an entire 3D-printed community in Texas, according to a CNN report.

Building on the Moon

ICON's 3D technology is also being utilized by NASA to develop a lunar surface construction system, with aspirations of one day using it on Mars.

"ICON currently has numerous 3D-printed projects underway to deliver social housing, disaster-resilient housing, and market-rate residential housing in addition to developing construction systems to create infrastructure and habitats on the Moon and eventually Mars with NASA," the spokesperson told Newsweek.

From an aerial view, its rounded perimeter resembles the outline of a coffee stain, while the side view reveals the layers of concrete that were individually extruded to form the walls. This field is rapidly becoming rich with innovations that could revolutionize the home-building sector, with some 3D firms capable of completing jobs in days.

Reducing Costs and Cutting Pollution

The American Institute of Architects notes that about 40% of U.S. planet-warming air pollution comes from construction and daily cooling, heating, and inside building lighting. However, reducing utility costs and pollution doesn't necessarily require a new 3D-printed home.

 Simple weatherization updates, such as better insulation, can save hundreds of dollars annually on energy expenses while also reducing harmful air pollution.

With Phoenix, ICON aims to cut its printing costs in half. Wall systems can be built for $25 per square foot, or $80 if the foundation and roof are included, according to the company's website. Currently the average cost to build a home in the United States is $150 per square foot, which includes interior and exterior finishes.
