Trump Orders Final Release of JFK, RFK, and MLK Assassination Records—But Will We See the Full Truth?

[WASHINGTON, D.C.] - Hello everyone, this is Samuel A. Lopez from USA Herald, and I’m here to share a groundbreaking development that has the legal and historical communities abuzz.

On January 23, 2025, President Donald J. Trump issued a sweeping Executive Order mandating the long-delayed release of all Federal Government records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Yet, despite the Executive Order’s clarion call for transparency, many questions remain. Will these documents be heavily redacted? Will new redactions be proposed? And what does the law—particularly the President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992—actually say about withholding such information?

Below, I’ll delve into the specifics of this Executive Order, the legal background that underpins it, and the swirling speculations about who might be implicated—and why the government may have fought tooth and nail to keep these documents under wraps.

Historic Revelations:

  1. A Two-Tiered Release Plan:
  • Within15 days of the Executive Order (February 7, 2025), a plan must be presented for releasing JFK-related
  • Within45 days of the Executive Order (March 9, 2025), a similar plan must be presented for releasing RFK and MLK documents.
  1. The Legal Backbone—JFK Records Act of 1992:
Under the law, assassination-related records had to be released by October 26, 2017, unless the President certified a “demonstrable harm” to national security, defense, or foreign relations. Successive administrations used these exemptions to keep files sealed—until now.
  2. Persistent Concern Over Redactions:
While the Order proclaims full disclosure is “long overdue,”past redactions from 2017 and 2018 remain, and the new review period may allow additional redactions to creep in—again, subject to presidential approval.

The President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992 explicitly states that all records “shall be publicly disclosed in full” unless the President certifies that continued postponement is necessary for national security or foreign relations.

“The identifiable harm is of such gravity that it outweighs the public interest in disclosure.”
— President John F. Kennedy Assassination Records Collection Act of 1992, Section 5(g)(2)(D)

From 2017 to 2018, President Trump accepted proposed redactions from agencies, but he also directed a continued re-evaluation of those redactions. Then, President Biden issued subsequent certifications in 2021, 2022, and 2023, effectively allowing more time for agencies to keep certain information sealed. With the January 23, 2025 Executive Order, Trump now claims that withholding these documents is “not consistent with the public interest” and that “the release of these records is long overdue.”

Despite that strong language, the Executive Order also greenlights a 15-day and 45-day review cycle, which some worry could result in agencies seeking additional redactions. After all, the White House has historically yielded to agencies’ national security arguments, demonstrating that “full disclosure” can become a game of push-and-pull between public transparency and bureaucratic caution.

This is where the story grows more complex—and, for many, more controversial. Over the years, an array of theories have circulated as to why the government would keep these documents hidden. Some of the more provocative ones include:

  1. JFK Assassination Allegations:
  • Rumors have pointed a finger at then-CIA operative George H. W. Bush, suggesting that President Kennedy’s desire to “dismantle” what he perceived as a growing military-industrial complex put him at odds with powerful federal entities.
  • Another popular claim involves JFK’s disputes with theFederal Reserve, insinuating that his plans threatened influential financial interests.
  1. RFK Assassination Theories:
  • Conspiracy circles sometimes accuse Bill and Hillary Clinton of having a direct role, contending that RFK’s success in the polls threatened Bill Clinton’s political ascent. Bill Clinton won after he died.
  • While these claims lack solid evidence, they persist, fueled by the delayed disclosure of official documentation.
  1. MLK Assassination Suspicions:
  • Some posit that President Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) played a role, especially because Dr. King’s activism was increasingly seen as politically destabilizing and threatened Democratic Party support among Black voters.
  • The notion that “the Deep State shadow government” orchestrated these events keeps reappearing in internet forums and political discussions.
  1. JFK Jr.’s Mysterious Death:
  • JFK Jr.’s fatal plane crash in 1999 has become entangled in conspiracies linking his demise to a grand plot to silence the Kennedy lineage.
  • Certain theories even tie this to Donald Trump’s presidency, noting the two men’s reported friendship and shared distrust of entrenched establishment networks.

While these theories range from the plausible to the outlandish, the secrecy around official documents—and the repeated delays in their release—have only added fuel to the conspiratorial fire.

Could some living individuals be directly implicated? Would that open the door to legal repercussions? In the unlikely event that any documents name individuals complicit in these crimes and still alive today, the potential legal outcomes could include anything from state-level homicide charges (if the statute of limitations doesn’t apply to the alleged act) to civil suits by the victims’ families. Federal and state governments could find themselves in uncharted waters if newly surfaced evidence implicates any surviving conspirators.

The 15-Day and 45-Day Countdown

  • Within 15 Days (Feb. 7, 2025):
The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) and the Attorney General (AG), in coordination with the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs and the Counsel to the President, must present a plan for the full release of JFK assassination files.
  • Within 45 Days (Mar. 9, 2025):
The DNI and AG willreview RFK and MLK assassination records and submit a plan for their immediate release.

To date, no explicit standard has been provided for how agencies will balance their duty to national security against the Executive Order’s directive for unfettered disclosure. The question still lingers: Will these agencies return with new redactions under the same “identifiable harm” justification that kept them secret all these decades?

Trump’s Stated Rationale

President Trump’s own words in the Executive Order shed some light on his motivation:

“The continued withholding of these records is not consistent with the public interest and the release of these records is long overdue.”

“I have determined that the release of all records in the Federal Government’s possession pertaining to each of those assassinations is also in the public interest.”

He underscores the public’s right to transparency, a right codified in the JFK Records Act, even as prior administrations—including his own in 2017 and 2018—affirmed agencies’ national security arguments.

Stay Tuned

As these 15-day and 45-day deadlines approach, I’ll be closely following every development. If this Executive Order truly ushers in full disclosure, it could rewrite decades of official narratives. If it falls short, we may see yet another chapter in the longstanding tug-of-war between government transparency and national security.
