Meta Marketer Sex Bias: Former Director Sues for Discrimination, Retaliation

Meta Marketer Sex Bias

In a dramatic legal challenge, Stonelake accuses Meta of fostering a hostile work environment, where women were subjected to bias and mistreatment. The lawsuit paints a troubling portrait of a corporate culture where men dominated decision-making, leaving women to fight for recognition and equal treatment. Stonelake’s legal action seeks justice for the emotional harm and career setbacks she claims to have endured during her time at Meta, including the mental health struggles that ultimately led to her departure.

A Career Undermined by Sexism

Stonelake's career at Meta began in 2008, when she was among the first employees at Facebook and contributed significantly to the company’s growth. Despite her distinguished track record and crucial contributions, including leading marketing efforts for Meta's Horizon virtual reality platform, Stonelake alleges she faced discrimination and was passed over for promotions in favor of male colleagues with lesser credentials.

In her lawsuit, Stonelake claims that after raising concerns about Horizon's safety features—specifically about parental controls and racial harassment on the platform—she was excluded from key leadership meetings. These actions, she argues, were retaliation for her outspoken stance on improving the platform's safety and inclusivity.

Sexual Harassment and Retaliation

The lawsuit also details numerous incidents of sexual harassment during her time at the company, including a shocking assault by a supervisor in 2012. According to the complaint, Stonelake was sexually assaulted by the supervisor during a work trip, an event that left her traumatized and resulted in her reporting the incident to no avail. The lawsuit claims the company did not take action, leaving her vulnerable to further mistreatment.

Despite her complaints to management and human resources about her treatment, Stonelake alleges that nothing was done to address the pervasive sexism and harassment. As her career advanced, the discrimination continued. She claims that under the supervision of a new male boss in 2016, she faced constant belittlement, higher performance expectations than her male peers, and a pattern of sexist comments that went unaddressed by HR.

The Breaking Point

Stonelake's mental health began to deteriorate as a result of the ongoing discrimination. In early 2023, she took emergency medical leave due to severe depression and suicidal thoughts. Yet, shortly after returning, Stonelake claims she was informed that she would be laid off, despite her years of dedication to Meta’s success.

Her suit alleges that this final blow was a direct result of the cumulative impact of discrimination, harassment, and retaliatory actions that had marred her career at Meta. Stonelake asserts that her career trajectory has been irreparably damaged by the company’s actions.

A Gender Imbalance in Leadership

Stonelake’s lawsuit highlights a gender disparity within Meta’s Reality Labs division, where, as of late 2022, only four women out of 20 marketing directors and vice presidents were present. By early 2023, Stonelake was one of the three women to leave the organization for medical reasons, with none of the women returning.

The lawsuit also claims that the company’s treatment of women contributed to a broader pattern of silencing and marginalizing those who challenged the status quo, especially when their views conflicted with male leadership.

Meta's Silence and Stonelake’s Fight

In a statement, Stonelake expressed frustration with Meta’s disregard for her attempts to address the company’s systemic issues. She believes that her efforts to raise awareness about discrimination were met with hostility, turning her into “the problem.” Stonelake has vowed to continue her fight, stating that the truth about the company's treatment of women must be heard.

Meta has yet to comment on the ongoing litigation. Stonelake is represented by Cynthia Heidelberg of Breskin Johnson Townsend PLLC.
