A remorseful death row inmate, Richard Lee Tabler, was executed on Thursday at Huntsville Prison in Texas. After he received the death penalty Tabler, 46, pleaded with the courts multiple times to stop his appeals and allow his execution to proceed. 

His attorneys, however, contended that his desire to die indicated a lack of mental competence. Despite their efforts, Tabler was put to death for the brutal murders of four people two decades ago.

Death Penalty Crimes 

Tabler was convicted of killing two men and two teenage dancers in 2004. He shot and killed 28-year-old Mohammed-Amine Rahmouni and 25-year-old Haitham Zayed near Killeen, Texas, on Thanksgiving after luring them under the pretense of purchasing stolen stereo equipment.

 Rahmouni, a co-owner of the TeaZers club, had allegedly threatened Tabler’s family, saying he could have them "wiped out" for $10.

Two days later, Tabler murdered 18-year-old Tiffany Loraine Dotson, a dancer at the club whom he had been seeing, along with 16-year-old Amanda Benefield.

Prosecutors primarily focused on the murders of Rahmouni and Zayed, securing a death sentence without pursuing charges for the killings of the two young women.

 "The murder of the men was as cold-blooded as it could be," said Paul McWilliams, the prosecutor in Tabler’s case. "The killing of the girls was just senseless. There was absolutely no reason for that."

Apology Before Execution

During his final moments, Tabler spoke directly to the victims' families.

"I had no right to take your loved ones from you, and I ask and pray, hope and pray, that one day you find it in your hearts to forgive me for those actions," he said, strapped to the death chamber gurney. "No amount of my apologies will ever return them to you."

He expressed deep remorse, stating that he regretted his actions every day and thanked prison officials for treating him with dignity. "I could change and become a better man and rehabilitate," he said.

Before the lethal injection was administered, he told the prison warden, "I am finished," and as the drugs took effect, he mouthed the words, "I'm sorry." He took a dozen quick breaths before all movement stopped.

Victims' Families React

Dotson’s father, George, witnessed the execution but declined to comment on Tabler’s apology. "I need time to process what I have just seen," he said, adding that he was glad to have witnessed it.

"I couldn't wait," he admitted. "It took me 20 years to get here."
