In a Manhattan federal courtroom on July 23, 2025, Daniel Hernandez—better known as Tekashi 6ix9ine—acknowledged violating the terms of his supervised release by possessing MDMA and cocaine, a move that could land him behind bars for up to five years. The admission underscores ongoing tensions between celebrity culture and the strictures of the federal justice system.

Hernandez was sentenced in December 2019 to two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to nine counts of racketeering, narcotics conspiracy and attempted murder for his role in the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods case, where he cooperated extensively with authorities. His cooperation led to a reduced sentence and placement on supervised release in April 2020 amid COVID‑19 concerns. Conditions of his release included random drug testing, strict travel restrictions, a ban on gang-related promotions and completion of 300 hours of community service.

Despite these rigorous terms, Hernandez has struggled to remain compliant. His supervised release agreement required regular check‑ins with his probation officer, abstention from controlled substances and pre‑approval for any out‑of‑state travel—conditions he has flouted repeatedly, setting the stage for Wednesday’s court appearance.

Raid and Admission

On March 12, 2025, federal probation officers executed a search warrant at Hernandez’s Miami residence. Law enforcement found three orange MDMA (ecstasy) pills and a small bag of cocaine residue hidden in a bedroom cabinet. The raid was part of a broader probe into his compliance with supervised release, following tips from a confidential informant. In Manhattan federal court, Hernandez formally changed his plea to guilty on two counts of drug possession, admitting the presence of the substances during his supervised release.

Plea Deal Dynamics

In exchange for his guilty pleas on the drug counts, prosecutors agreed to dismiss two other counts—one involving a pistol and another involving fentanyl—seized in an adjacent pool house. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan Rebold explained that DNA evidence linked the firearm to another individual residing on the property, prompting the decision to streamline charges. This strategic narrowing of charges highlights prosecutorial discretion in shaping high‑profile cases to secure convictions on core violations.

Potential Penalties and Sentencing

U.S. District Judge Paul Engelmayer scheduled sentencing for September 25, 2025, giving Hernandez time to complete the remaining 40 community service hours of his 300‑hour obligation. Under the federal sentencing guidelines, each supervised release violation carries a recommendation of three to nine months in prison. However, the judge retains the authority to impose up to five years behind bars plus a lifetime of supervised release for repeat offenders. Engelmayer sternly warned Hernandez of “severe” consequences for any further infractions before sentencing.

This latest plea follows a series of probation breaches. In October 2024, Hernandez was jailed for roughly six weeks after traveling to Las Vegas for a concert without court approval and testing positive for methamphetamine. Prior to that, he served 45 days for skipping drug tests and failing to report out‑of‑state trips to Sarasota, Florida. These repeated infractions have strained judicial patience and likely weigh heavily in the upcoming sentencing decision.

As the September sentencing date looms, the key question remains: will Tekashi 6ix9ine’s past cooperation and celebrity status mitigate his sentence, or will Judge Engelmayer impose the maximum penalty to send a stern message about compliance? Regardless of the outcome, this case serves as a potent reminder that federal supervised release terms carry real and far‑reaching consequences.
