As millions prepare to enjoy fried foods, concerts, and the iconic Big Tex, the State Fair of Texas is also facing mounting legal, safety, and community challenges. The 2024 fair, running from September 26 through October 19 at Fair Park in Dallas, arrives under the shadow of debates over firearms, immigration enforcement, and new security protocols.

In line with safety upgrades, the State Fair of Texas has introduced a clear bag policy. Visitors must use transparent bags to expedite security screenings, though medical bags, parenting bags, and soft-shell coolers will still be allowed after inspection.

Weapons Ban Sparks Legal Battle

In October 2023, three people were injured after Cameron Turner opened fire at the fairgrounds. Turner later pleaded guilty to unlawful carrying of a weapon in a prohibited place and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

In response, the State Fair of Texas updated its weapons policy in August 2024, banning firearms, knives (with small pocketknives as an exception), clubs, explosive devices, and other weapons.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton quickly pushed back. On August 28, 2024, he filed a lawsuit against the City of Dallas and the State Fair of Texas, arguing the ban violated state law. Paxton said in a press release:

“Earlier this year, the State Fair announced that it would be banning people with license to carry permits from exercising their rights at Fair Park. Such a policy directly violates state law.”

However, both the Texas Supreme Court and a Dallas County district judge dismissed Paxton’s efforts. The Texas Tribune reported that the lawsuit was struck down in late June 2024 before it could proceed to trial.

No More Free Tickets for High School Students

Another major change this year is the end of free admission for high school students in grades nine through twelve. While Pre-K through eighth graders and teachers still qualify for free tickets, older students will need to pay the $12 weekday entry fee.

According to fair officials, more than 2 million free tickets were printed annually for high schoolers, but only about 10% were used. With many school districts removing “Fair Days” from academic calendars, officials decided to end the program.

Members of the Latino community have raised concerns about possible ICE presence at the fair. Officials emphasized that the fair is meant to be a welcoming space.

Immigration Enforcement Questions

“This is a place for people to leave the troubles of the outside world,” said Karissa Condoianis, a spokesperson for the State Fair. “At the end of the day, we will follow the law.”

Dallas Police Deputy Chief Sam Ismail clarified that DPD does not conduct immigration checks at the fairgrounds:

“We do not have any units or operations specifically to go out and ask for immigration status. We just don’t do that.”

However, he acknowledged that if federal or local agencies request assistance, DPD would review the request on a case-by-case basis.

Despite the legal disputes and security updates, the fair remains one of Texas’s biggest traditions, highlighted by the annual Red River Showdown football game at the Cotton Bowl and attractions that draw more than 2 million visitors each year.

The State Fair of Texas runs from September 26 through October 19, 2024. Tickets are available here.
