Stolen Military Drones And The Emerging Threat of Foreign UAV Attacks On The California Coast

By Samuel A. Lopez | USA Herald - A quiet warning issued to California law-enforcement agencies has raised a troubling question about national security on the West Coast. At the same time that federal authorities are warning police departments about the possibility of Iranian drone attacks launched from vessels off the U.S. coastline, the U.S. Army is investigating the theft of four drones from a major American military installation.

Taken together, the developments have drawn the attention of federal investigators and homeland-security analysts who are attempting to determine whether the incidents are unrelated coincidences or signals of a vulnerability that adversaries could exploit.

According to an FBI alert circulated to law-enforcement agencies in California, federal officials recently obtained information indicating that Iran had allegedly considered launching a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel positioned off the coast of the United States.

“We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran,” the alert states.

The bulletin emphasizes that authorities currently have no confirmed intelligence regarding timing, targets, or the individuals who might carry out such an operation. Officials described the information as situational awareness intended for law-enforcement preparedness rather than confirmation of an imminent attack.

Yet the timing of the warning has added a new layer of scrutiny to a separate investigation involving missing military technology.

Investigators working with the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Division are seeking information about four drones reported stolen from Fort Campbell, the large Army installation located on the Kentucky-Tennessee border.

According to officials, the theft occurred in November of last year. Authorities later released surveillance images showing two individuals believed to be connected to the incident. The Army has offered a $5,000 reward for information that could lead to the recovery of the drones or the identification of those responsible.

What type of drones were taken has not been publicly disclosed in detail, but military investigators have confirmed that the aircraft were part of Army inventory. Even relatively small military-grade drones can carry sophisticated sensors, encrypted communications systems, or autonomous flight capabilities that exceed most commercially available platforms.

The theft itself raises immediate security concerns. Unauthorized access to military drone technology can expose vulnerabilities ranging from surveillance capabilities to operational tactics embedded within the systems.

For investigators, however, the more pressing issue is whether the incident reflects an isolated criminal act or something with broader implications.

Drone technology has become one of the most rapidly evolving elements of modern warfare. From the battlefields of Ukraine to conflicts in the Middle East, unmanned aerial systems are increasingly used for reconnaissance, targeting, and direct attacks. Even small drones can be adapted to carry explosives or conduct intelligence gathering operations.

Because of that reality, the possibility of foreign actors launching drones from maritime platforms near U.S. shores is now part of federal threat-assessment planning.

The FBI alert circulated in California suggests federal authorities are at least considering that scenario.

Launching drones from vessels positioned in international waters would not be unprecedented. Maritime drone operations have already been documented in several conflict zones, where ships have served as mobile launch platforms that can deploy unmanned systems while remaining outside territorial jurisdiction.

Security analysts say such tactics could complicate detection and response, particularly along the vast Pacific coastline.

California alone has more than 800 miles of coastline and includes major economic infrastructure such as ports, energy facilities, naval installations, and technology hubs. Any credible threat involving unmanned aerial systems operating offshore would therefore raise immediate national-security concerns.

Officials have not publicly connected the Fort Campbell theft with the FBI’s warning regarding potential Iranian drone activity.

At this stage, authorities have not suggested that the stolen drones were intended for foreign use or that they were linked to international actors. Investigators have described the theft simply as an ongoing criminal investigation.

Still, the juxtaposition of the two developments has prompted questions about how military equipment is secured, how drone technology can be tracked once it leaves government control, and how prepared federal agencies are to address emerging aerial threats close to U.S. territory.

The Pentagon has spent billions of dollars in recent years expanding drone capabilities across all branches of the military. At the same time, federal agencies have been grappling with how to counter unmanned aircraft threats domestically, particularly in situations involving hostile actors or terrorism.

Those discussions intensified after several incidents in which unidentified drones were reported near U.S. military facilities and critical infrastructure sites over the past decade.

Congress has also held hearings examining the legal authorities available to federal agencies for detecting and disabling unauthorized drones operating within U.S. airspace.

Under current law, the ability to intercept or neutralize drones is tightly regulated, and responsibilities are divided among multiple agencies including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Aviation Administration.

That fragmented framework has prompted calls from some security experts for expanded counter-drone authorities and improved coordination between federal and local agencies.

For now, the Army continues to seek information regarding the stolen drones from Fort Campbell while law-enforcement agencies across California have been advised to remain aware of the potential threat described in the FBI bulletin.

Whether the two developments ultimately prove unrelated remains unknown.

What remains unclear is whether the theft of military drone equipment represents an isolated security lapse — or an early signal of vulnerabilities that adversaries could exploit closer to the American homeland.
