Iran Rejects U.S. Ceasefire Blueprint as War Demands Escalate

iran rejects US ceasefire plan

Iran rejects US ceasefire plan, setting the stage for a deepening geopolitical standoff as competing visions for peace collide like tectonic plates beneath an already volatile region.

According to state-run Press TV, Tehran has firmly dismissed a 15-point proposal put forward by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the ongoing conflict. Instead, an unnamed senior political-security official outlined five counter-conditions—demands that diverge sharply from Washington’s blueprint and underscore the widening gulf between the two sides.

A War Fueled by Mistrust

The conflict erupted on February 28, when U.S. and Israeli forces launched coordinated airstrikes. Iran quickly expanded the battlefield, targeting American allies across the Gulf, transforming the confrontation into a regional flashpoint with global implications.

On Tuesday, Trump claimed Iran was “desperate” to negotiate, hinting at what he described as a “very significant prize” offered by Tehran—linked to oil, gas, and the critical Strait of Hormuz. However, he provided no further details.

Tehran swiftly pushed back. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed any suggestion of talks, accusing Washington of spreading “fake news” to manipulate global markets and deflect from what he called a strategic quagmire involving the U.S. and Israel.

What Trump’s Plan Demands

Nuclear Rollbacks and Regional Retreat

Details of the U.S. proposal, first reported by Israel’s Channel 12, reveal a sweeping set of demands aimed at dismantling Iran’s military and nuclear capabilities.

At its core, the plan requires Iran to:

  • Permanently abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons
  • Dismantle key nuclear facilities
  • Transfer enriched uranium stockpiles to the International Atomic Energy Agency for monitoring

The proposal also seeks strict limits on Iran’s missile program—both in range and quantity—while calling for an end to its financial and military support for regional allies, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis.

Additionally, Iran would be required to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as a “free maritime corridor.” The closure of this vital artery—through which roughly 20% of global oil and gas flows—has already rattled markets and sparked fears of a worldwide economic downturn.

In return, the plan promises the lifting of all international sanctions, many of which were reinstated last November after Iran halted nuclear inspections following U.S. and Israeli strikes on its facilities.

Tehran’s Counter-Proposals

Reparations, Sovereignty, and Security Guarantees

Iran’s response reads like a mirror image turned inside out.

According to Press TV, Tehran’s conditions include:

  • A complete halt to what it calls “aggression and assassinations”
  • Binding guarantees that future attacks will not occur
  • Financial compensation for war damages and reparations
  • Full control over the Strait of Hormuz
  • An end to Israeli attacks on Iran’s regional allies

The reference to “assassinations” echoes repeated statements by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to “cut the head of the octopus”—a phrase widely interpreted as targeting Iran’s leadership. Since the war’s outset, multiple senior Iranian figures have been killed in strikes, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during an early attack on Tehran.

Iran also insists that its latest demands build upon proposals presented during earlier negotiations in Geneva, held just weeks before the conflict ignited.

A Fragile Path to Peace

Diplomacy in the Shadow of Ongoing Fire

Any future negotiations are expected to be spearheaded by Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Observers note that the framework bears resemblance to diplomatic efforts used to broker a ceasefire in Gaza after prolonged fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Yet a key obstacle looms: a ceasefire itself.

Israeli leadership, according to Channel 12, may resist pausing military operations at this stage—echoing earlier hesitations during Gaza ceasefire talks. Economy Minister Nir Barkat told the BBC that Iran is unlikely to accept Washington’s terms.

“I believe at the end of this round, we will accomplish the goals, with or without a deal,” Barkat said.

No End in Sight

For now, the war resembles a high-stakes chess match where neither side is willing to concede a decisive move. With demands clashing and trust eroded, the prospect of peace appears distant—hovering like a mirage over a battlefield still very much alive.
