Harden, Strus Lead Cavaliers to 117-113 OT Thriller Over Pistons, Grab 3-2 Series Edge

The Cleveland Cavaliers escaped with a tense, high-stakes overtime victory Wednesday night, outlasting the Detroit Pistons 117-113 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. In a game defined by pressure, fatigue, and late-game execution, Cleveland delivered its first road win of the postseason and seized a pivotal 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.

James Harden and Max Strus emerged as key voices after the win, breaking down the grit, adjustments, and defining moments that pushed the Cavaliers over the line in a playoff battle that demanded everything.

Cleveland leaned on star power and depth to survive the chaos of overtime, with Harden powering a 30-point performance and Strus igniting the bench with 20 points in a game that never stopped swinging.

A Win Built on Grit and Defense

Max Strus made it clear the Cavaliers did not win with perfection, but with persistence and toughness on every possession.

"It took everything we had—resiliency, grit, and a possession-by-possession mentality. While it wasn’t our best offensive performance, our defense acted as the anchor, allowing us to get stops and rebounds when it pursued most. Finding a way to win on the road in the playoffs is a significant milestone for us, and it’s something we can definitely build on moving forward."

Full-Court Pressure and a Simple Mindset

Strus described his defensive approach as relentless and straightforward in a playoff environment where every possession matters.

"I’m simply trying to win the game by any means necessary. My goal is to impact the game however I can and help the team put our best foot forward. It really is that simple for me."

Harden on Taking Control of the Offense

James Harden explained that his aggressive scoring approach came from reading the defense and responding to the flow of the game, especially as teammates adjusted.

"I just read how they were guarding us. I’m always looking for opportunities to be aggressive, and since Don struggled a bit tonight, the rest of us needed to step up. Between Max hitting big shots and Dennis playing well, it was a complete team effort. I found an opening and decided to stay aggressive within our offense."

Mobley’s Clutch Moments Spark Confidence

Harden also highlighted the impact of Evan Mobley’s late-game execution and what it means for his development under pressure.

"It boosts his confidence to a whole new level. Evan is incredibly versatile; he can protect the rim, get steals, and contribute on both ends of the floor. Seeing him knock down big shots and free throws in pressure moments shows he is ready when the opportunity presents itself. He came up huge for us tonight."

Finding Balance in a New Role

As the series has progressed, Harden said his comfort level within Cleveland’s system is still evolving as he balances scoring and playmaking responsibilities.

"Everything is still relatively new since I’ve only been here for two and a half months. I’m still learning how to be a second option, when to play off Don, and when to hunt my own shots. Don is capable of taking over any game, so it’s about finding that balance between being a playmaker and a scorer. I think we are building in the right direction."

Strus Brings Energy Beyond the Box Score

Harden praised Strus for the impact that does not always show up in statistics, especially on defense and effort plays.

"It’s hard to put into just one word because his impact goes far beyond the stat sheet. He might only score five points, but his effort picking up players full court wears the opposition down. It takes a huge toll on the body, yet he finds another gear to compete and still hit big shots. He’s the type of player you can plug in anywhere and know he’ll be effective."

Pressure Moments at the Line

Harden reflected on the late free throws with the game on the line and the mindset required to deliver under intense pressure.

"Maybe there was a little luck involved in getting the ball, but you have to make your free throws. I pride myself on being a high-percentage shooter, and even though I missed a few looks earlier in the game, I kept the right mindset. It’s about trusting the process and staying focused until the final buzzer sounds."

Strus on Physical Preparation

Strus addressed questions about his physical development and readiness for the intensity of the postseason.

"I didn’t realize I looked bigger, but when you’re sidelined for months and can’t walk, all you can really do is lift. I’ve always felt strong, but I used that time to prepare my body and mind for moments exactly like this. I knew this team was capable of a deep run, and I wanted to be ready to help us win."

Respect From the Road Crowd

Harden also reacted to hearing his name chanted by opposing fans during a critical overtime free-throw sequence.

"I definitely heard them. To me, that’s the ultimate sign of respect. I appreciate it, and I just made sure to knock the shots down."

Behind the Scenes Leadership

Strus credited Harden’s daily preparation and consistency as a driving force behind his ability to deliver in clutch moments.

"He shows up every single day and puts in the work. You don’t become one of the greatest players in history without incredible consistency. Whether it’s the weight room, treatment, or getting extra shots up, he approaches it all like the Hall of Famer he is. His work ethic is why he’s able to deliver in those big moments."

A City and Team United

Harden closed by emphasizing the growing bond between the Cavaliers, the organization, and the fans supporting their playoff push.

"A million percent. This organization and the city feel like one big family, and that connection is palpable. I’m incredibly excited to be part of the direction this team is heading and giving me this opportunity. It is a beautiful thing to see how well-connected this city and the team actually are."
