A veteran pilot credited with saving 10 passengers after a devastating plane crash off Florida coast described a nightmare scenario in which his aircraft lost both engines, communication systems and navigation equipment before plunging into the Atlantic Ocean.

Ian Nixon, a 43-year-old Bahamian pilot and father of three, told reporters he faced a cascading series of failures aboard a Beechcraft King Air 300 while flying over open water Tuesday morning.

“Basically, lost my navigation, all radios — flying over 25 years and I’ve never seen anything like that,” Nixon said after returning home to Nassau following medical treatment in Florida.

The ordeal unfolded roughly 50 nautical miles east of the Florida coastline, transforming what should have been a routine regional charter flight into a desperate fight for survival over the ocean.

Engines Failed One After Another

According to Nixon, the problems began when the aircraft lost one engine before the second engine also failed, leaving the plane crippled midair.

At the same time, communication systems and avionics stopped functioning, cutting the aircraft off from air traffic controllers and emergency support.

“I wasn’t able to reach anybody on the radio for a while,” Nixon explained. “I tried to call Freeport; I tried to call Miami radio. I don’t know if they were hearing me, but I didn’t get a response.”

The flight had departed Marsh Harbour in the Abaco Islands and was headed toward Freeport on Grand Bahama — a journey that normally lasts only about 20 minutes.

Instead, the aircraft became a powerless machine drifting across the sky like a stone skipping toward disaster.

Pilot Forced to Crash Land in Atlantic

With both engines gone and avionics disabled, Nixon said he flew the aircraft as far as possible before making the decision to ditch the plane in the water.

“Once I hit the water my first thought was, ‘We didn’t die,’” he recalled. “That’s one of the things I remembered. We didn’t die, let’s get down.”

All 11 people aboard survived the crash.

Authorities said everyone onboard was transported to hospitals in Florida after the rescue operation, with three people suffering minor injuries.

Nixon himself received treatment for minor injuries at Holmes Regional Medical Center before being flown back to the Bahamas through arrangements made by the Bahamian government.

Hours Adrift Before Miraculous Rescue

After escaping the sinking aircraft, Nixon and the passengers climbed into a life raft while battling rough weather and uncertainty over whether emergency locator systems had activated properly.

For hours, the group floated in open water unsure if anyone even knew where they were.

Still, Nixon tried to keep hope alive.

“‘In the next 10 minutes a plane is going to come,’” he remembered telling passengers while drifting in the Atlantic.

Moments later, one passenger thought they heard something overhead.

Then salvation arrived.

Elite Air Force Unit Spots Survivors

A rescue aircraft from the 920th Rescue Wing eventually located the raft and coordinated the rescue effort.

The elite Air Force unit specializes in difficult search-and-rescue operations and later described the survival story as “pretty miraculous.”

Like a flicker of light piercing through a violent storm, the rescue aircraft appeared just as hope inside the raft was beginning to waver.

Nixon, who has flown since age 18, later reflected emotionally on the experience.

“Just have faith, keep praying and care about one another — always tell your family you love them,” he said.

Investigation Into Crash Still Pending

The Bahamas Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority confirmed it had notified relevant authorities about the incident but said it would not lead the investigation because the crash occurred outside Bahamian territorial waters.

Officials emphasized they would not speculate about the cause of the incident while the investigation remains ongoing.

“At this stage, the AAIA will not speculate on the cause,” the agency said in a statement. “Any such matters will fall within the scope of the official investigation conducted by the appropriate investigating authority once determined.”

As investigators begin piecing together what caused the catastrophic systems failure, the survival of everyone aboard already stands as an extraordinary story of skill, endurance and sheer luck in the aftermath of a terrifying plane crash off Florida coast.
