Me Too Fallout Deepens as French Star Patrick Bruel Faces Rape and Sexual Abuse Investigation

The Me Too movement continues to reshape France's entertainment industry as one of the country's most recognizable performers, Patrick Bruel, has been placed under judicial investigation on multiple allegations of rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment.

The development marks one of the most significant cases linked to the Me Too era in France and has reignited debate about accountability, justice, and the treatment of sexual abuse allegations involving high-profile public figures.

The 67-year-old singer and actor was taken into custody for questioning in Nanterre, a suburb west of Paris, before appearing before a panel of four judges. Following the hearing, judges approved a request from prosecutors to place Bruel under formal investigation while authorities continue examining the allegations.

Bruel has repeatedly denied all accusations.

What a Judicial Investigation Means

Under French law, being placed under judicial investigation does not constitute a finding of guilt. Instead, it signifies that an examining magistrate believes there is sufficient basis to conduct a deeper inquiry into the allegations.

The process allows investigators to gather additional evidence while giving the accused and their legal team access to prosecution materials. In many cases, judicial investigations ultimately lead to criminal trials.

French authorities are investigating several allegations involving rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and harassment. French law defines rape as any non-consensual act involving penetration.

A judge is also considering whether Bruel should remain in custody while aspects of the investigation continue.

Growing Impact of the Me Too Movement in France

The case represents another major chapter in France's ongoing reckoning with sexual misconduct allegations involving prominent cultural figures.

Feminist organizations and women's rights advocates welcomed news of the investigation, viewing it as evidence that accusations against powerful individuals are being taken more seriously than in the past.

Outrage by the Murder of Lyhanna

The investigation comes amid heightened public concern over how French authorities handle sexual violence cases. Public outrage recently intensified following the murder of 11-year-old Lyhanna, whose suspected killer had reportedly been the subject of previous abuse complaints.

Many activists have argued that the case underscores the importance of responding quickly and effectively to allegations of violence and abuse.

Me Too Allegations and Recent Reports

The investigation follows a series of reports published by French investigative outlet Mediapart, which stated that approximately 30 women described similar experiences involving alleged harassment or assault by Bruel.

Many of the allegations reportedly involve encounters on film sets, backstage areas, or music venues.

Last month, the accusations gained additional attention when television and radio presenter Flavie Flament publicly alleged that Bruel drugged and raped her in 1991 when she was 16 years old and he was 32.

Although Flament's allegation is not among the nine cases currently cited by judges because of the passage of time, prosecutors have reportedly requested that her case and a dozen other older allegations be re-examined for possible inclusion.

A Celebrated Career Overshadowed By Me Too Accusations

Born Patrick Benguigui in Algeria in 1959, Patrick Bruel became one of France's biggest stars during the 1980s.

He rose to prominence through hit songs such as "Marre de cette nana-là" and became the center of a fan phenomenon known as "Bruelmania." His success extended beyond music, with appearances in more than 30 films and numerous theater productions.

However, the allegations have had an immediate impact on his professional activities.

Recent theater performances in Paris were canceled, and organizers also scrapped a planned concert tour that would have included performances across France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada.

The cancellations effectively halted what had been a major return to the stage for the veteran performer.

Bruel Maintains His Innocence

Bruel has consistently rejected all accusations.

According to French media reports, the singer recently told associates that while he may have been "heavy-handed" at times, he always respected rejection and consent.

In a message posted on Instagram, Bruel firmly denied engaging in any form of sexual coercion.

"I have never forced myself on a woman," he wrote.

He further stated that he had never drugged, manipulated, or attempted to dominate anyone and had never used his celebrity status to obtain non-consensual sexual relationships.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no verdict has been reached.

Comparisons to Other High-Profile Me Too Cases

Bruel is not the only prominent French entertainment figure to face allegations in recent years.

Actor Gérard Depardieu was convicted of sexual assault in a separate case and received a suspended sentence. Depardieu has appealed that conviction.

The cases have contributed to a broader national conversation about sexual misconduct, celebrity influence, and the legal system's response to allegations against powerful individuals.

As investigators continue examining the claims against Bruel, the outcome could become another defining moment in France's evolving response to sexual abuse allegations and the lasting influence of the Me Too movement.
