Pulisic Is Not Training. What Happens to the U.S Team Without Him?

Mauricio Pochettino pulled Christian Pulisic at halftime of the USMNT's World Cup opener against Paraguay last week. The U.S. won 4-1. Three days later, Pulisic is still not on the training field and the next game, against Australia, is Friday, June 19.

Nobody knows if he will play. Nobody knows how serious the calf injury really is, and for the first time at this World Cup, the U.S. has to answer a question it hoped to avoid: what does this team look like without its best player?

What Pochettino Said

Pulisic took a direct kick to the calf in the first half of the Paraguay opener and felt tightness that forced the coach's hand at the break. "We didn't want to take any risks," Pochettino said afterward.

On Monday, June 15, while the rest of the squad went through standard training drills, Pulisic completed a modified gym and individual field session away from the group. No specific diagnosis has been announced beyond "calf tightness." No timeline for his return has been set. His availability for Friday remains uncertain.

That last part is the real concern. A calf injury in week one of a six-week competition is not a minor inconvenience. Depending on severity, it could mean one missed game or several. At the moment, nobody outside the medical staff knows which.

The System Holds. For Now

The U.S beat Paraguay 4-1, completing most of that result with Pulisic on the bench. Pochettino has spent two years building a squad that does not depend on a single player to function. In his 3-4-2-1 setup, Pulisic operates as the primary creative force, one of two attacking midfielders behind the striker. But the final result against Paraguay showed that the team moves, the system functions, and the other pieces can produce without him.

That is not nothing, at a home World Cup, with the whole country watching, having a team that proved it can hold shape and score under pressure is a significant margin of safety, Balogun's two goals against Paraguay showed the U.S. has firepower beyond its star.

The question is how long that margin holds if Pulisic misses more than one game.

Australia Is Not Soft Opposition

The Socceroos arrive in Seattle with three points of their own after a 2-0 win over Turkey in their opener. That was a clean, controlled performance from a team that reached the Round of 16 at Qatar 2022. Both the U.S. and Australia have won their opening match, which means Friday's game is effectively a battle for the Group D lead and for the better knockout bracket position.

Who Steps In?.

If Pulisic cannot play Friday, Pochettino's most likely creative replacement is Gio Reyna. He was a controversial roster choice given that he played just 137 minutes across eight club appearances since January, but Pochettino included him specifically for his ability to create the unexpected.

Tim Weah offers a different and more direct option, with seven international goals across 51 caps. Brenden Aaronson, Malik Tillman, and Alejandro Zendejas round out a group of attackers that has depth, even if none of them carry the same individual weight as Pulisic.

The drop-off is real. Reyna is talented but untested over long stretches of competitive minutes. Weah is a different type of player entirely. The creative burden that Pulisic carries alone would need to be distributed across multiple players, which changes how Pochettino sets up and how predictable the U.S. attack becomes.

The Bigger Question

The bracket is at home. The team is well-coached. And the opening 4-1 win gave real reasons for confidence. But the deeper question is not just whether Pulisic plays against Australia. It is whether he plays at all in this tournament. A calf injury managed carefully can heal within a week. One pushed too hard can end a campaign.

Pochettino, for his part, is not rushing anything. What he does have, and what the Paraguay result demonstrated, is a team that can keep winning while it waits for an answer.
