Ten months ago, this publication reported on an unusual global pattern: nations from Japan to Brazil were running planetary-defense drills at a pace and scale no one had seen before, all in the shadow of 3I/ATLAS, the third confirmed interstellar object ever observed passing through our solar system.

That sentence reads differently this week.

On September 14, Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told the Air, Space and Cyber Conference in National Harbor, Maryland, that the United States now has, in his words, "on-orbit space control weapons capable of defending the joint force against hostile adversary action." It was the first time a U.S. official has publicly confirmed that armed systems are already circling the planet, ending decades of official silence on a capability long assumed but never acknowledged. Meink did not say what the weapons are, how long they have been up there, or whether they strike kinetically or through other means. He did call the phrasing "very well thought out," a detail that suggests the disclosure was deliberate rather than a slip up.

Space-policy watchers reacted with something close to alarm. Victoria Samson of the Secure World Foundation called the admission "huge," noting that no prior U.S. official had ever said anything like it, and warned that Washington has effectively invited Beijing and Moscow to stop being coy about their own orbital arsenals. Other analysts framed it as a deterrence signal timed to a moment when China and Russia continue to test counterspace capabilities of their own, and as part of a broader push to establish the Space Force as a warfighting branch rather than a support arm.

None of that reporting mentions 3I/ATLAS. But the calendar is hard to ignore. Last fall's drills were the largest planetary-defense exercises on record: the European Space Agency ran a three-day activation of its full detection-and-response triad, Japan staged an accelerated asteroid-coordination exercise across civilian, military, and commercial operators, and the U.S. Space Force moved up a high-altitude orbital-tracking rehearsal originally slated for late 2026. Countries that almost never disclose this kind of activity, including Australia, South Korea, and Brazil, took part in joint drills built around tracking "non-gravitationally accelerated objects," language that had one obvious referent at the time.

The object driving that language has not gotten less strange. 3I/ATLAS did display an anti-tail pointed sunward, brightness swings inconsistent with a simple icy nucleus, and a small non-gravitational acceleration that standard cometary outgassing does not fully account for.

At the time, Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb floated a more provocative reading: hypothesizing that the anti-tail could be a loose cloud of compact objects traveling alongside the main body which he referred to as a “swarm of objects” rather than an ordinary gas plume.

It's worth being clear about what that is and isn't. It is a hypothesis from one prominent but frequently contrarian astronomer, not a conclusion that was ever adopted by the wider community that has studied the object.

The strongest link between this week’s announcement of active on-orbit space control weapons and the 2025 space drills during the peak of interest in 3I/Atlas is the push to detect, track, and understand orbital objects. More specifically, it highlights the drive to gain a tactical edge in tracking "non-gravitational accelerated objects"—a capability at the bleeding edge of space defense.

The International Asteroid Warning Network organized a 3I/ATLAS observing campaign from November 27, 2025, through January 27, 2026. Its purpose was to improve measurements of comet positions, which are complicated by diffuse clouds and tails that can distort calculations. The object supplied a useful target for an existing training objective.

Europe also demonstrated measurable gains. On November 14, 2025, ESA reported improving 3I/ATLAS’s predicted location tenfold by combining Earth observations with measurements from its ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Watching from near Mars provided a different angle, allowing scientists to narrow the object’s position more accurately.

Military exercises held during the same period provide a more direct connection to U.S. and allied readiness.

Resolute Space 2025, which began July 8, tested command arrangements and cooperation with allies under demanding military scenarios. An Australian officer served as deputy commander for the exercise’s friendly forces. Officials reported identifying lessons for improving coordination across commands and partner forces.

On April 17, 2025, the Space Force released its Space Warfighting framework, outlining orbital, electromagnetic and cyberspace warfare.

Planetary defense and military space control therefore remain distinct and active missions. The former addresses natural impact hazards; the latter concerns operating in space against adversaries.

Whether that shared foundation reflects real technology transfer, parallel investment, or coincidence is a fair question.
