A medical transport jet carrying six people disappeared during an overnight flight from Bermuda to Boston early Saturday, triggering a major U.S. Coast Guard search in the Atlantic Ocean off Nantucket.

The missing aircraft is a Canadian-registered Gulfstream G100, registration C-GRJP, operated by Ontario-based Latitude Air Ambulance. It departed Bermuda's L.F. Wade International Airport late Friday night with Boston Logan International Airport as its destination.

There were four crew members and two passengers aboard, according to reporting citing airport and company officials. The Canadian Press reported the group consisted of two pilots, two medical personnel, a patient and a family member. Four were Canadian and two were Bermudian.

That detail changes the context considerably. This was not simply a business jet traveling between two airports. It was an air ambulance — an aircraft designed to move patients who may require medical care during flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a Search and Rescue Alert Notice, known in aviation as an ALNOT, at approximately 1:20 a.m. Saturday after contact with the Gulfstream was lost.

An ALNOT is more serious than a routine attempt to reach an aircraft by radio. FAA rules describe it as an extensive communications search for an aircraft considered overdue, unreported or missing. It helps bring aviation authorities and search-and-rescue agencies into the effort to determine where the aircraft went and whether emergency assistance is required.

Importantly, loss of radar or radio contact does not by itself establish that an aircraft crashed. That distinction matters while a search is still underway.

The Coast Guard's search has been concentrated roughly 13 nautical miles south of Nantucket, according to local reporting. Assets involved include an MH-60 helicopter, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft, a C-130, a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Coast Guard Station Brant Point and the 154-foot USCGC William Sparling.

The aircraft had flown from Hamilton, Ontario, to Bermuda before beginning the Bermuda-to-Boston leg, according to flight-tracking records. The same aircraft had previously operated the Bermuda-Boston route.

As of the latest verified updates available Saturday, authorities had not publicly established what caused communications with the aircraft to stop. No official finding concerning mechanical failure, weather, pilot actions or another possible cause had been announced.

For now, this remains a search-and-rescue operation involving six people who were supposed to arrive in Boston — including a medical patient and the professionals transporting that person.
