Flydubai Co-Pilot Attacked Captain With Cockpit Crash Axe Mid-Flight in Alleged Terror Plot, UAE Says — Wounded Pilot Opened Door and Saved 170+ Passengers

DUBAI, UAE — A routine flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv turned into a fight for survival at cruising altitude when, according to United Arab Emirates prosecutors, the co-pilot turned on the captain with the cockpit's crash axe and tried to seize the controls of a packed Boeing 737 MAX 8. Authorities now call it an attempted terrorist attack, and the plane's captain, an Indian national, is being hailed as the man who saved everyone on board.

What Happened on Flydubai Flight FZ1073

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 left Dubai for Tel Aviv carrying well over 170 passengers, most of them reported to be Israeli nationals. Somewhere over the region, the co-pilot, identified as Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly attacked the captain inside the locked flight deck using the aircraft's crash axe, an emergency tool kept in the cockpit for use in rescue situations.

UAE Attorney-General Hamad Saif al Shamsi said the co-pilot "began executing his plan during the flight," attacking the captain and attempting to take control of the aircraft's flight controls. The captain, identified as Smit Machchhar, was badly hurt, with reported injuries to his head and stomach.

The Captain Who Opened the Door

Despite his injuries, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. That single act allowed crew members and passengers to rush in and subdue the alleged attacker. The aircraft then made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, and no fatalities were reported.

From his hospital bed, the captain described the moments in stark terms. "I was acting for my own life, but at the same time, I knew I couldn't let all of them die," Machchhar said, according to NBC News. Aviation observers note that opening a cockpit door in the middle of an attack runs against every post-9/11 security instinct, and that it was also the only thing that stopped the assault.

Who Is the Accused Co-Pilot?

Investigators say al-Hammami, an Omani national born in the UAE, had previously worked for Oman's national airline. Reports indicate he had been removed from flying duties there over concerns that he had adopted radical ideological views. That detail raises an obvious and uncomfortable question: how did a pilot with that history end up in the right seat of a commercial airliner at another carrier?

The suspect was transferred to Abu Dhabi for medical evaluation and questioning. Prosecutors describe the incident as an attempted terrorist attack, saying the co-pilot "tried to take control of the aircraft."

A Multinational Investigation

Authorities from four regional countries are investigating, with assistance from the United States and Western partners. Investigators are examining technical and digital evidence to establish motive, background, and any possible contacts or accomplices. U.S. officials have said there is no evidence linking Iran to the incident, an important statement given how tense the region already is.

Fallout has been immediate. The UAE cancelled flights to Israel, and Israel's flag carrier El Al suspended its scheduled UAE flights following the incident. For the Gulf-Israel aviation links that have carried millions of passengers since the Abraham Accords, the suspension is a notable setback.

Why This Matters for American Travelers

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 is flown by U.S. and international carriers alike, and the crash axe is standard equipment on many commercial aircraft. The case will almost certainly revive debate over how airlines screen pilots for mental health and ideological risk, and how information about a grounded pilot travels between carriers and countries.

In the United States, two-person cockpit rules and reinforced doors were designed after September 11 to keep threats out. This incident is a reminder of the threat model they cannot fully cover: the one already inside the cockpit. Safety experts have long argued that airlines need stronger information sharing about pilots removed from duty for security or psychological reasons, and this case is likely to feature heavily in that argument.

Travelers should not expect immediate changes at U.S. airports, but regulators and airline unions typically move quickly after incidents of this kind. Expect questions about crash axe storage, cockpit access procedures, and pilot background checks from aviation authorities in the coming weeks.

What Comes Next

Prosecutors have not yet released a full account of the suspect's motives, and some details remain unconfirmed, including exact passenger numbers, which have varied slightly across reports. Investigators are expected to focus on al-Hammami's digital footprint, his employment history in Oman, and any communications before the flight.

For now, the story has a clear hero. A wounded captain opened a door he had every reason to keep shut, and more than 170 people walked off a plane that could have been a catastrophe. The question for regulators on every continent is how close the system came to failing, and what it will take to ensure the next warning sign is caught before takeoff.

USA Herald will update this story as the investigation develops.
