Spain Erupts: Tens of Thousands Flood Madrid and 50 Cities After Parliament Kills Tenant Protections – Rubber Bullets Fired in Valencia as Sanchez Government Teeters

MADRID, Spain — Tens of thousands of people poured into the streets of Madrid and roughly 50 other Spanish cities on Saturday, furious after parliament shot down two emergency housing decrees that would have strengthened protections for tenants. The protests, fueled by soaring rents and a viral eviction, have put Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's fragile minority government under severe pressure and raised a blunt question: how long can Spain's housing crisis go on before it breaks its politics?

Parliament Rejects the Decrees

On Friday, October 2, Spain's parliament rejected two housing decrees proposed by Sanchez's minority left-wing government. The measures were designed to shield tenants and ease an affordability crunch that has priced many younger Spaniards and working families out of the cities where they live and work.

The decrees were defeated by an unusual coalition. The conservative Popular Party, the far-right Vox, and the Catalan separatist party Junts all voted against them. Junts argued the measures would tighten the housing market rather than ease it, a view shared by many property owners who say rent restrictions discourage landlords from offering homes at all.

An Eviction That Lit the Fuse

The vote did not happen in a vacuum. More than a week earlier, an 87-year-old pensioner was evicted from her home in Madrid, an image that struck a national nerve. In the days that followed, hundreds of people set up protest encampments in the center of the capital, and the demand for action grew louder with each night.

By Saturday, that local anger had become a national movement. Marchers filled Madrid and about 50 other cities, carrying signs with slogans such as "the right to a roof" and "Houses to live in, a planet to inhabit." Organizers and demonstrators called for broader reforms and, in some cases, a general strike.

Tension in Valencia

Most demonstrations were reported as peaceful, but not all. In Valencia, police used rubber bullets and tear gas against protesters, according to reports. Roughly 30 demonstrators briefly entered a cultural landmark in the city before being removed. The clashes underscored how raw the mood has become.

Political Fallout for Sanchez

For the prime minister, the defeat is more than a legislative setback. Sanchez leads a minority government that depends on shifting alliances to pass any major measure, and the failure of the housing decrees exposed how fragile that arrangement is. Opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo seized on the moment, urging Sanchez to call elections and claiming he has support "neither in the streets nor parliament."

The government now faces a difficult choice. It can try to rework the housing package to win over wavering parliamentary partners, risk a longer standoff with an increasingly mobilized public, or gamble on an early vote. None of those options is risk-free, and the housing issue is one that voters across the political spectrum take personally.

Why Americans Should Care

Spain's fight may feel far away, but the underlying story will be familiar to many American renters. Rents that rise faster than wages, investors buying up homes, and a shortage of affordable housing are pressures felt from Los Angeles to New York to Miami. How a major Western democracy responds, through tenant protection, new construction, or limits on short-term rentals, will be watched by policymakers everywhere.

There is also a travel angle. Spain is one of the most visited countries by American tourists, and the tension between tourism-driven rental markets and local residents has been a central flashpoint in the housing debate. Travelers heading to Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia should expect demonstrations and possible disruption in city centers, and should follow local guidance.

What Happens Next

Protest organizers have signaled that they are not going away, and the encampments in central Madrid show no sign of ending quickly. Watch for whether unions embrace the call for a general strike, whether the government brings back a revised housing plan, and whether Junts and other parties shift their positions under public pressure.

What is already clear is that housing has moved from a policy argument to the central political fault line in Spain. A pensioner's eviction, a failed vote, and tens of thousands in the streets have combined into a test of whether Madrid can deliver on one of the most basic promises of any government: a place to live.
