Trump Forces Kimberly Guilfoyle to Resign as U.S. Ambassador to Greece

Kimberly Guilfoyle, the U.S. ambassador to Greece and a longtime ally of President Donald Trump, is preparing to leave her diplomatic post after the White House asked her to resign. The reported decision follows allegations involving a $100,000 request to a businessman before her Senate confirmation hearing, raising questions about her conduct and access to senior administration officials. Guilfoyle has denied the allegations and said she intends to defend her reputation.

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced Tuesday that the administration had asked Guilfoyle to step down, according to the supplied report. Zacharia described Guilfoyle as a valuable member of the team and said the White House wished her well.

Guilfoyle subsequently confirmed her plans to resign in a post on X, while maintaining her support for Trump and his political movement.

“While my time as ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” Guilfoyle wrote.

She also described serving as ambassador as an extraordinary honor and thanked Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for selecting her to represent the United States in Greece.

Kimberly Guilfoyle: Background and Career

Guilfoyle built a career spanning law, television news, political campaigning and diplomatic service. Before becoming a nationally recognized political figure, she worked as a prosecutor in California, including service in the San Francisco district attorney's office and the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Her legal background helped establish her public profile before she transitioned to television.

Guilfoyle became a prominent political commentator on Fox News, where she appeared on programs covering U.S. politics and current events. Her television career expanded her visibility among conservative audiences and brought her into contact with influential political figures.

She later became closely involved in Republican politics and served as a prominent supporter of Trump's presidential campaigns. She also became known nationally through her relationship with Donald Trump Jr., the president's eldest son. The couple became engaged but later separated.

Her connections to the Trump political network helped bring her into the administration's diplomatic orbit. In 2025, Trump nominated Guilfoyle to serve as U.S. ambassador to Greece. She appeared at her Senate confirmation hearing in July 2025 and was confirmed in September, according to the supplied account.

The ambassadorial appointment represented a transition from political media and campaign work to formal diplomatic service.

Alleged $100,000 Request Raises Questions

The controversy centers on businessman Eric Deters, who told CBS News that Guilfoyle asked him in July 2025 to transfer $100,000 to cover an American Express bill before her confirmation hearing.

Deters alleged that the payment would have prevented the debt from appearing on Guilfoyle's financial disclosures. He characterized the alleged request as “pay to play,” claiming he had sought assistance from Guilfoyle in obtaining access to Trump administration officials, including the attorney general and the Internal Revenue Service commissioner.

Those statements represent Deters' account of the exchange. They do not, by themselves, establish that Guilfoyle committed wrongdoing.

Guilfoyle and her Attorney Dispute Deters Account

According to the supplied report, sources familiar with the matter said White House officials had been told that text messages between Guilfoyle and Deters were authentic. The Wall Street Journal initially reported on the messages.

Deters said he ultimately did not provide the money. He told CBS News that he used his wife's supposed opposition as an excuse to decline the request.

Guilfoyle has rejected the allegations and said she will vigorously defend her name. The publicly described allegations and her response remain central to the controversy.

Guilfoyle's lawyer has disputed the authenticity of the text messages and argued that payments discussed with Deters related to prior services. The Associated Press and other outlets have also reported additional allegations and scrutiny by the State Department inspector general.

Trump Says He Is Unhappy With Guilfoyle

The resignation request followed Trump's comments to reporters Monday that he was considering firing Guilfoyle and was “not happy,” according to CBS News.

The White House subsequently confirmed that it had asked her to resign. Its public statement praised Guilfoyle's service while indicating that the administration wanted her to leave the position.

Guilfoyle's response emphasized that her departure from the ambassadorship would not change her support for Trump or the America First movement. Her statement did not concede the allegations concerning the alleged payment request.

The developments also come amid reports about Guilfoyle's relationships with people in the president's circle. Although she was previously engaged to Donald Trump Jr., sources cited in the supplied report said the two were no longer in frequent contact.

Questions About Travel and Diplomatic Conduct

Separate reporting by The Wall Street Journal described Guilfoyle discussing luxury travel allegedly paid for by wealthy Greek business figures. The report also addressed her frustration over being excluded from a dinner involving Eric Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The travel allegations have added another dimension to scrutiny of her conduct as ambassador. However, the details of the reported arrangements and their significance should be distinguished from established findings of misconduct.

The State Department had not publicly announced a replacement for Guilfoyle at the time described in the supplied report.

What Happens Next?

Guilfoyle's planned resignation leaves questions about the timing of her departure, the selection of a successor and whether the allegations involving the businessman will prompt further scrutiny.

Her career has moved through prosecution, television commentary, Republican political organizing and diplomatic service. The current controversy places renewed attention on the boundaries between political relationships, personal finances and public responsibilities.

Guilfoyle maintains that she will defend her reputation, while the White House has made clear that it wants her to leave the ambassadorial position. Any conclusions about alleged misconduct will depend on verified evidence rather than political statements or allegations alone.
