Key Settlement Details
A group of Aetna policyholders has announced a substantial settlement whereby the insurance behemoth will disburse $2 million and amend specific health insurance policies. This resolution comes after a proposed class action criticized Aetna’s definition of infertility, which purportedly made it challenging and costly for LGBTQ couples to access fertility treatments.
Aetna To Pay $2M To End LGBTQ Fertility Coverage Suit: Revised Definitions and Benefits
According to a recent motion for preliminary settlement approval, Aetna Life Insurance Co. is set to revise its clinical policy bulletins. This pivotal change redefines “infertility,” thereby ensuring that individuals in LGBTQ relationships are eligible for fertility treatments without undergoing unnecessary procedures. Specifically, these changes eliminate the requirement for multiple cycles of artificial insemination before qualifying for in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In a groundbreaking move set for next month, Aetna will standardize intrauterine insemination (IUI) benefits across all its commercial plans and include IUI as a regular feature in model self-fund plans.
