Over the past few months, Democrats have amped up their rhethoric against various law enforcement officials, especially those which pertain to immigration.

Various House caucus members are already in favor of abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Moreover, certain left-wing presidential candidates have suggested decriminalizing the act of unlawfully crossing the United States Southern border.

House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has taken matters a step forward. During an interview last week, the congresswoman vocalized her support for doing away with the Department of Homeland Security altogether.

Why Does AOC Want to End the DHS?

Last week, Ocasio-Cortez appeared on the New Yorker Radio in order to discuss her thoughts on immigration matters. David Remnick, the host of the radio show, asked Ocasio-Cortez about whether or not she'd want to end the Department of Homeland Security.

At this point, the congresswoman admitted that she is supportive of ending the entire establishment which is the Department of Homeland Security.

In Ocasio-Cortez's own words:

"I think so. I think we need to undo a lot of the egregious, umm, a lot of the egregious mistakes that the Bush administration did. We are, at a very, it’s a very qualified and supported position, at least in terms of evidence, and in terms of being able to make the argument that we never should of created DHS in the early 2000s."

The Role of the DHS

The Department of Homeland Security plays a very critical role in the protection of the United States of America. The responsibilities of the organization include securing the borders, shielding the nation from terrorist threats, and helping the country deal with natural disasters and outbreaks. Ending the Department of Homeland Security would place the United States in harm's way on so many levels.

Ocasio-Cortez has also previously called for the abolition of ICE. Last month, the congresswoman likened detention centers at the Southern border to "concentration camps," something which many Americans pushed back against.

News of AOC's interview with New Yorker Radio is already making the rounds on social media. Calling for the abolition of DHS is something which many Americans will view as radical, especially conservatives. Ocasio-Cortez also hasn't hesistated to tweet about her issues with the department.

At this time, the DHS has not officially responded to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's interview. It is unlikely that the organization will face abolition, for reasons previously stated.
