Engel explained to Law360 that Salt Lake City was “not the right place” for the firm at this time. “We are redirecting our firm resources to other markets and offices that are thriving, where driven, committed lawyers are serving clients at the highest level,” he stated to Law360 Pulse on Tuesday.
Impact on Personnel and Future Strategy
Armstrong Teasdale opened its Salt Lake City office in 2020. However, lateral hiring in Utah’s capital city dropped significantly, by over 54% from 2022 to 2023, based on data from Firm Prospects. The Boston office, also opened in 2020, was part of the firm’s East Coast growth strategy.
The firm has set a Sept. 30 deadline to conclude operations in Salt Lake City and Boston. This decision impacts one lawyer and five business professionals in Salt Lake City, and 10 lawyers and seven business professionals in Boston, according to Engel. “Over the next three months, we will concentrate on helping our colleagues to transition smoothly with robust outplacement services and the opportunity to apply for open roles elsewhere in the firm,” Engel noted.
