Sonnenschein filed a lawsuit in 2020, and claims that her constitutional rights were violated by this application process. In June 2022, the Texas appellate court announced an opinion dismissing all but one of Sonnenschein’s claims. The claim that was not denied was her equal protection claim. The court issued the following: “Sonnenschein failed to identify any legally protected liberty or property interest in her petition or response to the Board Members’ plea to the jurisdiction and has failed on appeal to cite any authority supporting her contention that she has a constitutionally protected interest in obtaining a Texas law license.”
Sonnenschein is represented by herself.
The Board is represented by Ken Paxton, Brent Webster, Karen L. Watkins, S. Grant Dorfman, Shawn Cowles and Ernest C. Garcia of the Office for the Attorney General of Texas.
The case is Sonnenschein v. Rivera, et al., case number 22-0581, in the Supreme Court of Texas.
