Many individuals believe that artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are synonymous and interchangeable entities. However, contrary to certain misconceptions, there are some very clear differences which separate AI and ML.

Comparing and Contrasting AI and ML

As cited by B.D. Tech Talks, artificial intelligence is formally defined as “the science and engineering of making computers behave in ways that, until recently, we thought required human intelligence.”

However, machine learning is a subcategory of AI and furthermore pertains to exposing AI to data and allowing the technology to subsequently “learn” from said data without direct human programming or interference.

An Overview of Artificial Intelligence

As it stands, AI has and will continue to impact humans and our overall society. One of AI’s most obvious effects in our world has manifested in technology. Even rideshare services (such as Lyft and Uber) which (currently) employ human drivers heavily rely upon the use of GPS. Various big businesses are also working on the development of self-driving cars.
