According to The Wall Street Journal, the US intelligence agencies are no closer to determining the COVID-19 origin. Officials from the Department of Energy have determined with "low confidence" that the Covid pandemic may have originated from a laboratory leak. But the FBI thinks it is more likely. This theory has been debated for three years and remains a possibility along with the natural occurrence theory. Officials cannot issue a definitive cause for the virus's origin, without additional information from China.

The report was drafted after considering new intelligence and consulting with non-government experts. It remains unclear if the less than five-page report will be made public. Despite struggling to issue a definitive cause for the virus's origin, much of the intelligence community has concluded that the virus was not deliberately created as a biological weapon in 2021. The intelligence memo leaves open the possibility that it was created by the Wuhan research lab and accidentally leaked. However, officials have found that both theories about a natural occurrence and a lab leak remain possibilities. The varying degrees of certainty among agencies about their theories were also reported by The Wall Street Journal. According to the WSJ, the theories and varying degrees of certainty are as follows: Department of Energy: lab leak (low confidence) Federal Bureau of Investigation: lab leak (moderate confidence) Central Intelligence Agency (and one unidentified agency): undecided between natural transmission and lab leak National Intelligence Council (and four unidentified agencies): natural transmission from an infected animal (low confidence) True to form, the various agencies are not revealing much. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said members of the intelligence community settled on some "conclusions on one side, some on the other." And seem equally divided. He also mentioned that several agencies have said they "just don't have enough information to be sure." If any further insight or information becomes available, Sullivan claims that they will share it with Congress and the American people. Currently, there is no definitive answer that has emerged from the intelligence community regarding the virus's origin.
