DeSantis Endorsed Trump

DeSantis made the announcement through a social media video on X. This represents a major shift in the dynamics of the upcoming Republican primaries.

Trump said he was deeply honored at receiving the endorsement.

He also emphasized their joint effort to overcome what he termed as "the worst and most corrupt president in the history of our country," referring to Joe Biden.

The Florida governor explained his decision by stating that a majority of Republican primary voters' desire to give Trump another chance.

DeSantis also pointed to the challenges faced by Trump. He cited the relentless resistance and ongoing legal battles as factors that hindered Trump's agenda.

In the video he acknowledged past disagreements, particularly on the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the elevation of Anthony Fauci. And he also made it clear that Trump is the preferred choice over the current incumbent, Joe Biden.

Out with the Old

DeSantis criticized the idea of reverting to the "old Republican guard." He explicitly mentioned Nikki Haley as a representative of that outdated ideology.

This move by DeSantis reflects a rejection of what he perceives as a repackaged form of "warmed-over corporatism."

The endorsement signals a departure from the traditional Republican establishment, aligning with the populist sentiments championed by Trump.

DeSantis, a former navy lawyer and rightwing congressman, had been considered a formidable opponent to Trump as recently as spring 2023. His supporters believed that he could provide Trump's policies without the accompanying drama.

DeSantis's gubernatorial victory in the November 2022 election against Democrat Charlie Crist underscored his popularity and appeal within the Republican base.
