Last week the online community got the details in a 404 Media exposé that the Spy Pet site has been orchestrating a massive data mining operation.  Discord, the popular communication platform, with nearly 620 million users was the victim of the digital theft.

Kotaku reported that the Spy Pet closed down shortly after the exposé was published online.

Spy Pet: Data Mining Menace

The clandestine operation, codenamed Spy Pet, recently came under scrutiny following a damning exposé by journalist co-op 404 Media. 

Operating under the radar for several months, a network of automated "self-botting" accounts, programmed to scour approximately 14,000 Discord servers was mining private data. The hack attack acquired a massive amount of data.

Spy Pet, a seemingly safe site, had been secretly siphoning billions of Discord messages, harvested from user accounts. Then the sensitive data was being peddled to the highest bidder for as little as $5 a piece.

Naturally, Discords’ user base is outraged.

The Cryptocurrency Connection

Spy Pet's data scrapping project had extended into info about cryptocurrency obtained from private chatrooms. The full extent of damage is still unknown. But the agenda appears to be more than mere data mining.

With an audacious disregard for ethical boundaries, Spy Pet unabashedly advertised its services to a diverse clientele, ranging from stalkers to law enforcement agencies.

Before the site went down Spy Pet advertised itself as a service for people who wanted to track their friends, to police who wanted to buy user data and to anyone looking to train AI.

Spy Pet had some surprising ties to the Kiwi Farms forum, which is well known as a harassment site. And Discord believes the owner of the attack bots is a member there.

Discord Claims Platform Abuse

Discord is taking against the platform abuse and vow to root out the bad actors. They plan to increase the cybersecurity on the platform and safeguard the integrity of its user community.

 In a statement to 404 Media, a Discord spokesperson reaffirmed the company's commitment to upholding its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. They are emphasizing that scraping its services and engaging in self-botting constitute violations warranting swift and decisive action.
