The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced Tuesday that it will allocate more than $1.1 billion in Indian Housing Block Grant funding to support affordable housing initiatives in Native American tribal communities.
The funding will be distributed to eligible Native American tribes, tribal villages in Alaska, and tribal entities designated to receive HUD support. Notably, the Navajo Nation in Window Rock, Arizona, received the largest allocation, with a block grant exceeding $132 million.
The Indian Housing Block Grant program is designed to assist tribal communities in housing development, operations, and modernization efforts. This funding aims to address the affordable housing challenges faced by urban, rural, and tribal populations across the country.
“From day one, HUD has been engaged in alleviating affordable housing challenges facing urban, rural, and tribal communities,” said HUD Secretary Scott Turner. “Today’s announcement reaffirms our commitment to serve tribal communities while working towards meeting Indian Country’s housing needs.”
Secretary Turner added, “HUD has a strong partnership with tribal nations, and I look forward to collaborating directly with tribal leaders to expand housing opportunities and remove burdensome regulatory barriers that impede progress.”
