“These cases should be a wake-up call for how the justice system treats internal investigations,” one legal analyst told the outlet.
Forensic Doubts and a Possible New Weapon
A Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik played a key role in the investigation that led to the original mistrial.
He told other authorities that John O'Keefe may have been hit in the face with a bar glass, causing injuries to his face and head.
Investigators, ultimately, alleged that Read struck her Boston cop boyfriend with the back of her Lexus SUV and fled the scene, leaving him to die in the cold.
Defense lawyer Alan Jackson got Bukhenik to concede on Thursday that he called the medical examiner's office and said there was a possibility that O'Keefe could have been hit in the face with a cocktail glass.
Adding to the growing uncertainty, the suggestion is that the injuries sustained by O’Keefe may not match the damage expected from being hit by Read’s SUV.
Instead, the trooper pointed to a possible weapon both inside and outside the home. This raises further questions about whether O’Keefe was attacked before being moved outdoors.
As reported by Fox News, the state trooper’s statement could significantly alter the direction of the case.
What Comes Next?
As the retrial looms, several key developments are expected:
- Additional forensic analysis may be presented to challenge the theory that Read’s vehicle caused the fatal injuries.
- Witness credibility—especially that of Higgins and other officers involved—will be under renewed scrutiny.
