The U.S. Supreme Court has brought an end to a long-standing legal battle by ordering the dismissal of a lawsuit filed by a group of congressional Democrats.
The lawmakers had sought detailed information regarding a government lease for a Washington hotel during the time it was owned by Republican former President Donald Trump.
The court’s decision comes after the Democrats voluntarily dropped their 2017 lawsuit against the General Services Administration (GSA), the federal agency responsible for managing government real estate.
The lawsuit primarily focused on the Trump International Hotel, a popular gathering spot for Trump supporters, lobbyists, and foreign dignitaries.
Legal battle
The case, brought forth by seventeen Democratic members of the House of Representatives Oversight and Reform Committee, aimed to obtain information about a 2013 lease of the Old Post Office building, located just a few blocks from the White House, to Trump’s company for its conversion into a hotel.
However, the Trump Organization completed the sale of the hotel’s lease to an investment firm last year, making the lawsuit lose some of its practical significance.
