Peregrine Moon Lander Critical Condition 

Astrobotic, based in Pittsburgh, is grappling with a fuel leak on the Peregrine lander, rendering stable spacecraft pointing impossible to maintain. The company warns that the mission could fail within hours, marking a setback for NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program.

The Peregrine moon lander was part of a collaborative effort with two other commercial ventures, Intuitive Machines and Firefly, planning a total of six lunar surface missions in 2024. These missions aimed to advance lunar research in preparation for crewed visits to the moon through NASA’s Artemis program later this decade.

The urgency of the situation is underscored by the fact that a successful touch-down on the lunar surface, a milestone not achieved by the United States in half a century, is now deemed impossible.
