OpenAI announced on Wednesday that it has resolved a significant issue that disrupted services for millions of users worldwide.

The outage, which lasted over four hours, affected access to ChatGPT and Sora, the company’s newly released AI video generator.

What Happened During the OpenAI Outage?

The issue began on December 11th, shortly after the debut of Sora Turbo, the upgraded version of OpenAI’s video generation tool. At around 6 p.m. ET, the company posted on X:

“We’re experiencing an outage right now. We have identified the issue and are working to roll out a fix. Sorry and we’ll keep you updated!”

The outage rendered OpenAI’s services, including its developer API, inaccessible. Recovery efforts began before 10 p.m., and by 10:38 p.m., OpenAI reported that all services were fully operational.

“ChatGPT, API, and Sora were down today but we’ve recovered,” OpenAI stated in a follow-up post on X.

Sora Turbo’s Upgraded Features

Despite the setback, OpenAI is moving forward with its latest innovations. Sora Turbo offers a standalone video generation product for ChatGPT Plus and Pro users. Key features include:

  • Video quality up to 1080p resolution
  • Video lengths up to 20 seconds
  • Support for widescreen, vertical, and square formats
  • Customizable content creation using text, images, and videos

The platform now features a storyboard tool for frame-specific inputs and feeds showcasing recent and featured community creations.
