On Thursday Two U.S. Air Force C-17 planes, each transporting approximately 80 deported migrants, successfully arrived in Guatemala. However, a third flight intended for Mexico was canceled after Mexican authorities refused entry due to a “paperwork glitch.”
By Friday night multiple US planes with immigrants on board were greenlit to land in Mexico.
Headline-making Paperwork Glitch
Despite the headline-making event both the US and Mexico claim they are cooperating. And the event was due to a “paperwork glitch” that had nothing to do with policy.
In a statement, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized its collaborative ties with the U.S. and its consistent policy of welcoming deported Mexican nationals.
“When it comes to deportation operations, we always welcome Mexicans back to our land with open arms,” the statement read.
This development comes amid the Trump administration’s revival of the “Remain in Mexico” program, which the Biden administration had rejected. It requires non-Mexican asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while awaiting U.S. immigration court decisions.
