“When he was arrested, he quickly said, ‘Who else did you arrest?’” said John Kelly, an experienced criminal profiler following the case closely. “Not the normal response for someone being arrested for [allegedly] brutally killing four kids with a knife.”
Kelly theorized that this unusual reaction might indicate Kohberger deliberately staged evidence at the crime scene to mislead investigators.
Staging the Crime Scene?
“Maybe this is the reason why he made that stupid response: he staged some other DNA, blood, to throw authorities off,” Kelly said. “Remember, from his studies, he would know about staging.”
Kohberger was pursuing a Ph.D. in criminology and criminal justice at Washington State University at the time of the murders, giving him academic insight into forensic procedures.
Criminal defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden speculated that Kohberger’s question may have been related to concerns about his father. “I think he was thinking about his father being arrested,” she said.
Before the SWAT team’s raid, Kohberger and his father had been pulled over twice by Indiana police while driving cross-country from Washington to Pennsylvania.
