The Northern Lights have a chance to be visible from several northern U.S. states on Tuesday night, forecasters at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said, although space weather would not likely cause any significant coinciding geomagnetic storms.

Forecasters at NOAA are predicting a Kp index of four out of nine, meaning the northern lights could move further south from Earth’s magnetic north pole and appear brighter.

Experts at the agency said no geomagnetic storms caused by solar winds were expected to impact the Earth on Tuesday night in its most recent three-day forecast, but the planet could still see the aurora on Tuesday night anyway.

The Northern Lights will Be Visible

The aurora could be spotted from states along the U.S.-Canada border, according to NOAA’s view line for Tuesday night. These include northern Washington, the Idaho Panhandle, most of Montana, North Dakota and northern South Dakota.

They could also be visible from parts of the upper Midwest, including most of Minnesota, northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. On the East Coast, they could also be visible from the northernmost part of Maine. Most of Alaska falls within the view line as well.

The Best Way to View the Northern Lights

Experts at NOAA recommend prospective aurora viewers travel as far north as possible, toward Earth’s magnetic north pole situated in northern Canada.

They should find a vantage point with a clear view of the northern sky, preferably one away from other light sources like cities. Viewers should also time their trips to the hours the aurora is most active—typically between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m.

The Best Way to Photograph the Northern Lights

Viewers who want to take quality photos of the aurora can use typical smartphone cameras, an expert who spoke to Forbes said.

Typical smartphone cameras can capture the northern lights in detail with the right settings and equipment. Photographers should remember to turn off flash, shoot in RAW image format and use a tripod or solid surface to position their phones.

iPhone users should opt for their device’s standard lens, rather than the wide-angle lens, and shoot using Night mode. Android users should switch on their device’s pro mode.
