China has unveiled the discovery of the world’s largest gold reserve, located beneath the Wangu gold field in Pingjiang County, Hunan Province.
This “supergiant gold deposit” contains over 1,000 tons of gold, with an estimated value exceeding $80 billion at current market prices. The find positions the Wangu gold field as the richest source of gold on Earth.
A Record-Breaking Discovery
China, already the world’s largest gold producer, accounts for 10% of the global output. With the new discovery, China’s total gold reserves are estimated to exceed 2,000 tons.
The scale of the Wangu deposit rivals South Africa’s historic reserves, where 900 tons were found in mines buried over 6,500 feet deep.
The Geological Bureau of Hunan Province (GBHP) has been conducting extensive drilling at Wangu, uncovering more than 40 veins of exceptionally pure gold ore.
Preliminary results reveal that more than 300 tons of gold are located within veins less than 6,500 feet deep. Advanced 3D modeling suggests an additional 700 tons lie deeper, extending to depths of nearly 9,800 feet.
