President Donald Trump is set to deliver his State of the Union (SOTU) address in the House Chamber on February 5. On Monday evening, the White House announced that Trump accepted the invitation of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She invited the President to give his annual speech after the Congress after the federal government reopened. On Friday, Trump ended the longest partial government shutdown. He signed into law the short-term spending bill to fund the government for three weeks while Congress continues to negotiate the funding for border security. In her letter to Trump, Pelosi wrote, “When I wrote to you on January 23rd, I stated that we should work together to find a mutually agreeable date when government has reopened to schedule this year’s State of the Union address.” She added, “In our conversation today, we agreed on February 5^th. Therefore, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on February 5, 2019 in the House Chamber.” In response, Trump wrote, "It is my great honor to accept. We have a great story to tell and yet, great goals to achieve! I look forward to seeing you on the 5^th.” Last week, the President’s SOTU became the center of disagreement in the negotiations to end the shutdown. Pelosi decided to withdraw her earlier invitation to Trump and stated that Democrats will prevent him from delivering the SOTU in the House Chamber. The President was originally scheduled to deliver his speech on January 29. Trump slammed Pelosi and the Democrats for their decision. He told White House reporters that he wasn’t surprised. He also stated, “It’s really a shame what’s happening with the Democrats. They’ve become radicalized.” He eventually decided to postpone the SOTU until the shutdown is over. In a tweet, Trump said Pelosi has the “prerogative” to cancel her earlier invitation. He is not considering other locations for his speech “because there is no venue that can compete with the history, tradition and importance of the House Chamber.”
