In October 2021, in order to redefine its brand and expand its market presence, Living Essentials, the creator of 5-Hour Energy, entered the $21 billion U.S. energy drink market. With a full-sized 16 oz drink, the company aimed to diversify its offerings and cater to a wider range of consumers.

However, as the energy drink venture unfolds, the iconic energy shot segment, which has been a cornerstone of 5-Hour's business, faces its own set of challenges.

Despite its dominant market position, it has experienced a decline in sales over the past year. 

According to Circana data covering the last 52 weeks ending on August 31, dollar sales dipped by -3.6%, amounting to a $27 million decrease compared to the previous year.

While other energy shot-makers like Tweaker (+6%) and Stacker (-2.8%) have seen mixed results, they hold less than 3% of the category.

This downward trend in sales has been happening for several years. Unit sales in August saw a year-over-year decline of -7.7%, marking a continuing decline from January 2021 (-13.5%) and August 2020 (-12.6%).

One factor contributing to the softness in the energy shot segment is the perceived lack of innovation.

5-Hour Energy faces changing marketplace

Edwin Henriquez, Senior Research Analyst at Euromonitor International, points out that the category appears stagnant compared to the dynamic energy drink and functional beverage markets. 

Henriquez highlights the growing shift towards powdered formats and healthier, fitness-oriented energy drink options.

Consumers are increasingly seeking products that offer more functionality and engagement, moving beyond mere energy provision. This shift has impacted the appeal of traditional energy shots.

5-Hour Energy's President and CEO, Jeff Sigouin, acknowledges that the brand might have been slow to enter the powdered format segment but has no immediate plans to venture into it.

However, the company does intend to introduce more functional innovation into both its shots and beverages in the coming year. Additionally, a packaging refresh is on the horizon for 2024.

Market Impact of COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about changes in consumer shopping habits. Online shopping and self-checkout became more prominent, altering the retail landscape. 

5-Hour Energy experienced a boost in bulk e-commerce sales through platforms like Amazon, Walmart.com, and Target.com, particularly in formats like 24- and 30-packs. However, this increase has not fully compensated for the softening of brick-and-mortar sales.

Jeff Sigouin remains confident in the energy drink maker’s ability to thrive, even in a retail environment undergoing transformation. Despite the challenges posed by reduced impulse purchases at physical stores, where 65% of the brand's business typically thrives, he believes in the enduring value proposition and product appeal.

 As retailers evolve, Sigouin is optimistic that the company will continue to find its place in the changing consumer landscape.

As 5-Hour Energy grapples with market shifts and evolving consumer preferences, it faces the ongoing task of adapting to these changes while maintaining its position as a leader in the energy category. The future will reveal how successfully it navigates these challenges and continues to energize consumers in innovative ways.
