American Moon mission burns up over Pacific Ocean, No chance of a soft lunar landing

soft lunar landing

The much-anticipated American moon mission ended in flames over the Pacific Ocean this week. The spacecraft developed unsurmountable problems on January 9th at its launch with no chance of a soft lunar landing.

The Peregrine One, US spacecraft launched last week to try to land on the Moon has signed off.

The spacecraft developed a propulsion fault, dashing any hopes of a successful lunar touch-down. As a result, the mission was terminated with the command to destroy the Peregrine One as it re-entered Earth's atmosphere.

Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic, the private operator behind the mission, directed the spacecraft to burn up upon re-entry. A tracking station in Canberra, Australia, confirmed the loss of signal with Peregrine at 20:59 pm GMT (3:59 pm EST).

There is no expectation for any remains of Peregrine to survive impact with the ocean surface, and even if they did, the debris would fall far away from any populated areas.

Astrobotic's original objective was to deliver five NASA instruments to the Moon's surface.

These instruments were intended to study the lunar environment in preparation for the return of astronauts later in the decade. Peregrine One, serving as their pioneer mission, unfortunately, fell short of the goals.

Soft Lunar Landing

The unsuccessful Peregrine mission would have marked the first American moon landing in half a century and the first-ever achievement by a private venture.

Instead, the next contender for a lunar landing is Japan-based JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). JAXA is set to attempt a landing at the near-equatorial impact crater named Shioli, with the event scheduled for 15:20 GMT on Friday.

Historically, controlled lunar landings have been achieved only by government agencies from the U.S., the Soviet Union, China, and India.

The Astrobotic's mission encountered challenges shortly after its launch on January 8, with a propulsion fault jeopardizing the entire mission. Despite the setbacks, the mission operated for over 10 days in space, showcasing resilience and ingenuity in problem-solving.

Learning from Challenges

The fault that plagued Peregrine was traced back to leaking propellant from a ruptured oxidizer tank.

This leakage generated thrust, causing the craft to turn and preventing it from keeping its solar panels oriented toward the Sun—a crucial aspect for maintaining a stable power supply.

Engineers and scientists worked diligently to diagnose and address the issue, successfully restoring stability to the craft.

Sian Cleaver, Airbus' Orion European Service Module industrial manager, highlighted the significance of this mission on the BBC's Today Program.

Despite the challenges faced, she emphasized viewing it as an "incredible engineering success" rather than a failure.

Data Gathering

While the soft lunar landing goal remained elusive, the Peregrine mission did achieve some noteworthy outcomes. Payloads onboard were activated, demonstrating their space-worthiness, and some instruments successfully gathered data.

The Peregrine Ion Trap Mass Spectrometer (PITMS), a NASA instrument with components developed in the UK by the Open University and RAL Space, performed well in check-out tests. This technology holds the potential to fly again on future lunar missions.

 Intuitive Machines

As Astrobotic reflects on the lessons learned from the Peregrine mission, the next U.S. company gearing up for a soft lunar landing attempt is Intuitive Machines.

Based in Houston, Intuitive Machines plans to launch its Nova-C craft towards the lunar south pole in the coming month.

The landscape of lunar exploration is evolving with private-public partnerships, and the collaboration between NASA and commercial ventures like Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, and Firefly is set to continue with planned missions to the lunar surface in 2024.

Soft Lunar Landing Planned

Astrobotic remains committed to lunar exploration and is slated to get a second chance later this year when it attempts to land a NASA rover named Viper.

The journey toward soft lunar landings continues. And these private ventures are ongoing advancements in space exploration.

The Peregrine mission did not achieve the coveted soft lunar landing. But the moon quest continues.  The challenges encountered serve as valuable insights for future missions, contributing to the collective knowledge of space travel.
