CALIFORNIA – The legal community is reeling after the State Bar of California dropped a bombshell revelation: artificial intelligence helped author multiple-choice questions for the February 2025 bar exam.
Coming at a time when judges across the nation are admonishing lawyers for improperly using A.I. in courtrooms, this disclosure has many questioning whether the Bar—the so-called guardian of legal competence—is now itself relying on tools it warns others about.
But the firestorm doesn’t end there. Critics say the A.I. controversy is just the tip of the iceberg. Beneath the surface, accusations are mounting that the State Bar’s controversial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives are systematically disadvantaging white male applicants, creating what some call a modern-day “gatekeeping” scheme in the name of diversity.
