What Netflix Workers and Investors Need to Know

• Netflix is eliminating roughly 1,000 jobs, about 6% of its workforce, in its largest round of layoffs since 2022.
• Product, technology, legal and human-resources employees are expected to take the biggest hit—not Netflix’s film and television production workforce.
• The cuts land just six days before Netflix reports third-quarter results, while the company is spending aggressively on advertising technology, live programming, games and other new businesses.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - Netflix is cutting approximately 6% of its workforce—close to 1,000 jobs—in a reduction that says considerably more about where the streaming giant intends to spend its money next than simply how many employees are leaving.

Co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters informed employees Wednesday that product, technology, legal and human resources would bear much of the reduction. They told workers Netflix remains “strong and growing” and said the company needs to make focused decisions about where it puts people and resources while continuing to invest in areas expected to drive growth.

Netflix finished 2025 with approximately 16,000 full-time employees, including about 10,900 in the United States and Canada. That makes a roughly 1,000-person reduction significant, even for a company of Netflix’s size.

What Netflix has not done is almost as interesting.

As of Wednesday afternoon, USA Herald found no dedicated layoff announcement posted on Netflix’s public Newsroom or its Investor Relations financial-release page. The information instead emerged through an internal employee memo and subsequent confirmations to news organizations. Netflix’s Investor Relations site currently lists its September announcement concerning upcoming third-quarter earnings, but no public press release specifically announcing the layoffs.

Netflix appears to be reallocating resources while expanding businesses that did not exist at anything close to their present scale just a few years ago. Netflix says its advertising business now reaches more than 250 million monthly active viewers globally, while the company is building AI-supported advertising tools, expanding programmatic advertising and pushing further into live sports, video podcasts and games.

Netflix also said in August that U.S. upfront advertising commitments had nearly doubled from the prior year.

That makes the personnel mix worth watching. Product and technology employees are being reduced at the same time Netflix is investing heavily in sophisticated advertising infrastructure and AI-assisted advertising products. Investors should watch whether future hiring shifts toward specialized engineering, advertising technology and AI-related positions rather than rebuilding the jobs being removed.

There is also an employment-law issue largely absent from the streaming discussion.

Netflix is headquartered in California. Under California’s WARN rules, covered employers generally must provide 60 days’ advance written notice when a qualifying layoff involves 50 or more employees within a 30-day period at a covered establishment. Whether Netflix’s particular reductions trigger California or federal WARN requirements will depend on where affected workers are located, how the terminations are structured and when they become effective. California also strengthened WARN notice requirements in 2026, requiring additional information about assistance available to displaced workers.

Health insurance is another immediate concern. Employees losing employer-sponsored coverage generally may be entitled to COBRA continuation coverage following termination, although workers can ordinarily be required to pay the full premium plus an administrative charge unless Netflix subsidizes coverage through a severance package.

One date now deserves particular attention - October 20.

That is when Netflix is scheduled to release its third-quarter financial results and business outlook. Investors will get their first detailed financial look at the company only six days after employees learned that roughly one out of every 16 Netflix jobs is disappearing.
