Most homes take months of hammers, crews and weather delays. ICON builds them with robots. The 3D-printing homebuilder said it has raised $200 million in a Series D financing round led by investment managers Baillie Gifford and BlackRock, money that will support deployment of its robotic construction systems and the opening of a research and development facility in Austin, Texas.

Where the Expansion Is Headed

ICON said in a news release Tuesday that the financing will also help expand its operations in Texas, Florida, Washington, D.C., and other U.S. markets.

A Crowded Investor Table

Other firms participating in the round include Capital Factory, CAZ Investments, Moderne Ventures, Moonshots Capital, Norwest, Overmatch, The Syndicate and Tiger Global.

A Track Record Built in Concrete

ICON said it has built more than 270 homes and structures in five states. Its projects include Wolf Ranch in Georgetown, Texas, developed with homebuilder Lennar and considered the world’s first and largest community of 3D-printed homes. Another is Community First! Village in Austin, a 100-home development for people experiencing homelessness.

From Suburbs to Army Barracks

In January, ICON broke ground on 10 barracks at Fort Bliss, in what the company called the largest deployment of robotic construction technology ever used by the U.S. Department of Defense. The company said it has been awarded more than $370 million in government contracts.

Building Beyond Earth

ICON is also working with NASA on Project Olympus, an initiative developing systems for building structures on the moon.

The CEO’s Pitch

“Construction automation has crossed from potential into proven reality,” said Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON. “This round puts that reality in builders’ hands: more Titan systems deployed across the country; deeper capability in housing, commercial and defense; and continued work on the technology that will one day build humanity’s first structures beyond Earth.”

ICON did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Wednesday. Counsel information was not available.

From a Texas subdivision to a lunar worksite, the company is betting that the printer will eventually replace the framing crew.
