In a move as unexpected as a shoe company trading soles for servers, Allbirds pivots from footwear to AI, sending shockwaves through investors and igniting a massive surge in its stock price.

Shares of Allbirds skyrocketed by 582% Wednesday after the company unveiled plans to abandon its core business and transform into an artificial intelligence infrastructure firm. The company, which held a modest market value of about $21 million just a day earlier, saw its stock leap from under $3 to roughly $17 — a meteoric rise rarely seen outside speculative frenzies.

From sneakers to servers

In a statement posted to its investor relations page, Allbirds said it would pivot toward AI compute infrastructure, rebranding itself as “NewBird AI.” The company also revealed plans to raise up to $50 million in funding, with the deal expected to close in the second quarter of 2026.

The strategy centers on acquiring high-performance, low-latency computing hardware — the backbone of modern AI systems — and leasing it to customers through long-term agreements. The company said this approach aims to meet demand that traditional spot markets and large-scale providers have struggled to reliably fulfill.

Like a retailer swapping storefronts for server farms, the pivot signals a complete transformation of identity and ambition.

A brand reshaped, not erased

Even as Allbirds shifts direction, its consumer-facing legacy will persist. The company recently agreed to sell its intellectual property and other assets for $39 million to American Exchange Group, which will continue selling products under the Allbirds name.

The footwear company had already been retrenching. In February, it shuttered all full-priced retail stores across the United States, marking a retreat from its once-aggressive expansion strategy.

Riding the AI gold rush

Allbirds is the latest entrant in a swelling tide of companies chasing the AI boom — a wave that has surged since OpenAI launched its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022.

The infrastructure underpinning artificial intelligence is both costly and complex, but potentially immensely profitable. Chip giant Nvidia, which dominates the market for graphics processing units, has soared to become the world’s most valuable company, with a market capitalization approaching $5 trillion.

Yet history offers a cautionary echo: companies facing headwinds have often pivoted toward whatever industry is hottest. During the cryptocurrency boom, many firms rebranded around blockchain to revive investor interest — with mixed results.
