Renowned anti-government agitator, Ammon Bundy, faces a hefty price for his controversial actions. An Idaho court ordered Bundy to compensate a local hospital to the tune of over $50 million for defamation and inciting disruptive protests.

Ammon Bundy, the Hospital, and "Baby Cyrus"

St. Luke's Meridian Medical Center bore the brunt of Ammon Bundy's incendiary acts while treating a malnourished child referred to as "Baby Cyrus," who was under protective custody. Bundy, known for his involvement in the far-right People's Rights Network (PRN), was arrested for trespassing in March last year, stirring controversy around the hospital.

Riding a wave of unwavering audacity, Bundy launched a week-long protest alleging the hospital had "medically kidnapped" the child. Further fanning the flames of controversy, he claimed it was due to a "missed non-emergency doctor's appointment."

The Fallout of Bundy's Actions

Two months after the protest, St. Luke’s hospital struck back with a defamation suit against both Ammon Bundy and the child's grandfather, Diego Rodriguez, also a PRN activist. Their respective companies, including Rodriguez’s Freedom Man Press, which broadcasted the contentious “kidnapping videos,” were also named in the lawsuit.

The verdict, delivered on Monday, was as groundbreaking as the Ammon Bundy case itself. The court ordered Bundy, Rodriguez, and their implicated companies to pay $26.5 million in compensatory damages and an additional $26 million in punitive damages.

St. Luke’s attorney Erik Stidham underscored the importance of deterring Bundy's reckless actions, stating that their entities had become a “massive ugly machine built to make money and radicalize people.”

A Legacy of Defiance and Unrest

In a pattern of habitual defiance, Ammon Bundy, notorious for his armed confrontations with law enforcement, remained absent throughout the legal proceedings. His response to the lawsuit's default judgment was an unfounded claim that police were surrounding his house, calling on his PRN followers to come to his defense.

The Bundy-led mob instigated a climate of fear among patients and families in the hospital, with testimonies highlighting instances of Life Flight pilots refusing to land due to concerns about potential gunfire from the ground.

The aftermath of the Ammon Bundy saga represents a crucial moment of accountability. The ruling sends a stern message to agitators, underscoring the serious legal consequences of their actions. Despite their absence in court, Bundy and Rodriguez have publicly addressed the case since its filing, with Bundy alleging St. Luke’s has rejected his offers for peace.
