New reports indicate that Border Patrol agents and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials are displeased about the lack of compensation they're received as the government shutdown remains underway.

A Closer Look at Reports of Border Patrol Agents and ICE Officials

Many Americans are aware of the reason behind the government shutdown. After President Trump and Democratic leaders failed to reach an agreement on legislation to keep government open, it shut down on the evening of December 21, 2018. Since then, a resolution or comprise between both sides still remains nowhere in sight.

However, there seems to be some ambiguity about various perceptions of the shutdown. Many federal workers have ongoingly expressed displeasure about going without pay. Although, shutting down the government for the sake of the wall has supposedly garnered favor amongst others; this is according to Brandon Judd, the president of the National Border Patrol Council. Judd recently stated that border patrol agents supported the shutdown for the border wall.

David Borer, the General Counsel of the American Federation of Government Employees, seems to disagree with Judd. Earlier today, Borer shared the following statements with Hill.TV:

"Yeah, he says that but members, many of them, are calling us saying, 'I need to get paid.'"

Borer also stated that talks of border security will become futile if government workers are unable to pay their bills.

"You can debate border security all day long but you can’t do it with people locked out and not able to feed their families."

The Government Shutdown

At the core of the government shutdown lies the impasse regarding border security. From a purely objective standpoint, President Trump and Democrat leaders maintain wholly different ideas of effective reform. The president believes that the border wall is the only solution; Democrats, however, have consistently denounced a physical barrier as wasteful and ineffective.

As the government shutdown lingers on, there are more and more reports of displeased federal workers. Many government employees are not happy about mandates which force them to work without compensation during the shutdown. Earlier this month, a select group of federal workers brought a lawsuit against the Trump administration; the lawsuit maintains that having to work without a paycheck violates the 13th Amendment.
