Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has officially severed ties with the Democratic Party. She registered as an Independent, according to early details from her forthcoming book. 

Jean-Pierre, a longtime Democratic strategist and top spokesperson under President Joe Biden, is using her new platform to advocate for a political system beyond traditional party lines.

Her announcement comes months after President Biden withdrew from the 2024 presidential race following a widely criticized debate performance. This ultimately led to Vice President Kamala Harris’s unsuccessful run against former President Donald Trump.

A Political Shift Decades in the Making

Karine Jean-Pierre has spent decades working within Democratic circles, serving in the Obama administration, on the Biden-Harris 2020 campaign, and for the progressive advocacy group MoveOn. Her sudden break from the party stunned many political insiders and added fuel to ongoing debates over the Democratic Party's direction.

“We need to be clear-eyed and questioning, rather than blindly loyal and obedient as we may have been in the past,” Jean-Pierre told CNN.

She also faced significant pressure during her tenure for deflecting questions regarding Biden’s mental fitness, particularly in the aftermath of his final debate.

Inside Jean-Pierre’s Book: Independent

Her upcoming memoir, titled Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines, is scheduled for release in October via Legacy Lit, an imprint of Hachette Book Group.

According to the publisher, the book will “examine the three weeks that led to Biden’s abandoning his bid for a second term and the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to his decision.” Jean-Pierre makes it clear that her transition to an Independent was not impulsive but rooted in deep disappointment with the party's leadership and priorities.

“She didn’t come to her decision to be an Independent lightly,” the book description reads.

A Voice for Political Change

Jean-Pierre’s defection may mark a broader sentiment among disillusioned voters frustrated with the two-party system. By positioning herself outside partisan boundaries, she aims to open a conversation about political accountability and democratic renewal.

“Until January 20, I was responsible for speaking on behalf of the President of the United States. At noon on that day, I became a private citizen… contending with what was to come next for our country,” she said.
