Democrats are losing their chances to secure the Senate

Three Republican Senate bets who were targets for the Democrats were re-elected. In the nail-biting races, Montana Senator Steve Daines, Iowa Senator Joni Ernst, and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham were all able to retain their seats.

Republicans were also able to keep their high hopes with Senator John Cornyn winning in Texas. In Kentucky, Senator Mitch McConnell, the top Republican, secured a seventh term.

Republicans have centered on the economy and fending off a Democratic-led Senate that could push for progressive legislation, while the Democratic party hugely focused their campaign messaging on the protection of the Affordable Care Act and increasing efforts to fight the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Affordable Care Act, which Republicans sought to repeal, took on further resonance and laid bare the condition of the health sector in the face of the pandemic.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has led the charge to protect this law.
