Celebrations and Traditions

The Gregorian calendar marked January 1 as the new year in 1912, but the Lunar New Year continues to hold sway as a cultural touchstone.

Cities across the globe erupt into joyous revelry, punctuated by parades, festivals, and the resplendent cascade of fireworks. 

These traditions span centuries. The Lunar New Year traces its roots to China's agricultural cycle, offering farmers a Spring Festival as a season to celebrate the harvest. And it beckons families together to celebrate each other.

This festival includes a variety of customs. The exchange of hóngbāo, or red envelopes is supposed to spread good fortune. And covering windows with intricate paper cuttings, invokes luck for the journey ahead.

At the heart of festivities is the tradition of the Reunion Dinner. This is a feast uniting family in gratitude and reflection.

Against the backdrop of laughter and shared memories, an extra place is set to honor absent loved ones whose spirits are still loved by those they left behind. Memories.

The Year of the Dragon

The crux of the Lunar New Year lies in the revered Chinese zodiac, a twelve-year cycle steeped in myth and tradition.

Legend says that the twelve celestial animals descended from the heavens, bestowing their unique traits upon those born during each particular year.

In the Chinese zodiac, the Dragon reigns supreme. It embodies qualities of strength, ambition, and unwavering power.

As we say goodbye to the Year of the Rabbit and welcome the Dragon's fiery embrace, we are reminded that each passing year has its unique blessings and challenges.

The Chinese Zodiac

For the curious, the Chinese zodiac offers a roadmap to self-discovery, delineating personality traits based on one's birth year. 

The Chinese zodiac animals are Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.
