Tech giant IBM announced Monday that it will acquire data-streaming powerhouse Confluent in an $11 billion transaction, a move poised to reshape the real-time data landscape much like a seismic jolt reverberating across Silicon Valley.

A Mega-Deal Anchored in AI and Real-Time Data

Under the agreement, IBM will purchase all outstanding Confluent common shares at $31 each, according to the companies’ joint statement. IBM is being guided in the transaction by Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison LLP, while Confluent is represented by Cooley LLP.

Confluent, headquartered in Mountain View, California, operates a widely used open-source enterprise data-streaming platform designed to connect, process and govern reusable data and events in real time. Its technology supports more than 6,500 customers and partners, integrating with industry leaders including Microsoft and Anthropic.

IBM, long known for its enterprise solutions in hybrid cloud, artificial intelligence and consulting, said the acquisition cements its strategy to help companies harness data more intelligently, streamline operations and lower costs.

IBM Calls Confluent Essential to Next-Gen AI Deployment

IBM Chairman, President and CEO Arvind Krishna said the union will act as a digital nervous system for AI-powered enterprises.

“IBM and Confluent together will enable enterprises to deploy generative and agentic AI better and faster by providing trusted communication and data flow between environments, applications and APIs,” Krishna said. “With the acquisition of Confluent, IBM will provide the smart data platform for enterprise IT, purpose-built for AI.”

The companies said the deal will allow seamless integration of applications, analytics, data systems and AI agents across hybrid cloud environments — a step they likened to replacing a fragmented data puzzle with a unified, intelligent architecture.

Confluent Sees Acceleration Ahead Under IBM’s Global Scale

Confluent co-founder and CEO Jay Kreps said joining IBM marks a new chapter for the company.

“Since its founding, Confluent has helped organizations unlock the full potential of their data,” Kreps said. “We are excited by the potential to join IBM and accelerate our strategy with IBM’s go-to-market expertise, global scale and extensive portfolio.”

The acquisition, IBM said, strengthens its automation and data-intelligence suite, injecting advanced streaming capabilities into a portfolio increasingly centered around AI-driven solutions.

Deal Expected to Close in 2026

IBM plans to fund the deal entirely with cash on hand, and the companies expect the transaction to close by mid-2026, pending regulatory approvals.
