Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly on the verge of stepping down, with an announcement potentially coming as early as Monday, according to Canadian media.

This news marks the culmination of what has been described as Trudeau's most difficult year in politics.

Justin Trudeau's Political Journey

Trudeau became leader of the Liberal Party in 2013 and assumed the role of prime minister in 2015.

While his tenure was initially marked by widespread support, his recent years in office have been overshadowed by mounting challenges and dwindling popularity.

Resignation Speculation

Reports indicate that it is unclear exactly when Trudeau will step down. However, sources suggest his resignation will likely occur before a national caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday.

The speculation surrounding Trudeau's decision is further fueled by analysts pointing to the impact of strained relations with the U.S. under former President Donald Trump. 

Following a controversial meeting at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, Trudeau reportedly began contemplating his future as Canada’s prime minister.

Losing Support Amid National Struggles

Canada has faced several crises under Trudeau’s leadership, including a persistent housing shortage, a declining per-capita GDP, and high inflation rates. These challenges have contributed to a significant drop in Trudeau's approval ratings.

According to a Dec. 24 poll by Canadian pollster Angus Reid, Trudeau's disapproval rate stood at 68%, with only 28% of Canadians expressing support for his leadership.

Adding to the challenges, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned from Trudeau's cabinet on Dec. 16, delivering a major blow to his administration.

In her resignation letter, Freeland wrote, “The only honest and viable path was to leave the Cabinet.” She emphasized the need for fiscal caution in light of potential economic challenges.

No Confidence Vote 

Trudeau has also faced growing opposition in parliament. A no-confidence vote in September, was led by the Conservative Party, but ultimately failed.

New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh announced plans for another motion of no-confidence on Jan. 27.

“No matter who is leading the Liberal Party, this government’s time is up,” Singh declared.

Public criticism of Trudeau intensified after he was spotted dancing at a Taylor Swift concert in Toronto in late November. This event coincided with violent protests in Montreal, sparking outrage among Canadians.
