Killer on the Run: New Jersey Detectives Uncover Evidence of a Second Murder

Killer on the Run
The case began on June 27, when Maxwell Johnston, 35, allegedly shot Gabriella Caroleo, 25, in Manchester Township. Caroleo was found with a gunshot wound to her stomach and was airlifted to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Her family revealed to local news station WACP that she had expressed fear for her safety just hours before the shooting. During the investigation, it was reported that Johnston taunted Caroleo’s family. He left disturbing messages during her funeral. And sporadically taunted them during the week he was on the run. Authorities tracked Johnston to a home in Toms River on July 5. Bolstad, Krysiak, and Palumbo surrendered to the police. Johnston and Mascarelli barricaded themselves inside.
The Standoff
After several hours of failed negotiations, a standoff ensued. Mascarelli eventually exited the home and was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained during the standoff. Johnston was later found dead in the bedroom from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Mascarelli was also a girlfriend of Johnston. The duo reportedly published their final intimate moments together on Instagram before his suicide. Mascarelli was later seen being taken away by ambulance, with injuries she recived after a police teargas canister struck her in the head. The pair engaged in a sexual act and posted the video and photos to Instagram under the account "Glizzygrimm".
